Yep, some states require you to have all axles on ground whether you need them or not. Or in JD statement can't haul it with axles stacked with load.

Idaho is that way when running under annual permit.

It's simple, 80/50/20 rule.
80% minimum WLL rating pulling back
50% minimum WLL rating pulling each side & forward
20% minimum WLL rating pulling down
5/16" G70 chaln is 4,700lbs WLL
3/8" G70 chaln is 6,600lbs WLL
7/16" G70 chaln is 8,750lbs WLL
1/2" G70 chaln is 11,300lbs WLL
Binder choice may be lower than the chain rating, make the appropriate choice.

Maybe it was just chained enough to put it on a scale. I know, I know you shouldn’t be on the road until you have enough. But if the scale is close by I will throw enough to keep it on, then weigh, then finish. It sucks throwing all that chain just to take it loose to move a machine.

The 80,50,50 refers to breaking strength not WLL. WLL criteria are .435 forward, .5 rearward and .25 lateral with no mention of up/down. That’s the regulation not a guide.

Yeah yeah yeah, we get it, that's how you do it and nobody messes with you in your 40 mile radius you operate in...
IIRC, nowhere in that manual is Breaking Strength used in securement calculations.
For the those of us who operate in the rest of North America, best advise is to use the North American Cargo Securement Standard in the book issued to/by the DOT from the FMCSA, because that's what they'll go by if you get an officer who knows securement regs. Most don't, but some do know it incredibly well.
Load securement equipment is marked with WLL for a reason, it's the limitation we are to use, not breaking strength.
Besides, why take a shortcut when it's your own life you could be saving.
We know, you're moving 80 pieces of equipment a week so you can't waste time. Not all of us do that, so we have a different standard to do what WE do. Try crossing 12 different scales in 4 states in one day and decipher all those differing interpretations. I guarantee you that if you try arguing breaking strength ratings in BC, they'll laugh at you while writing the ticket.

Well Mr. I’m the greatest thing that’s ever driven a truck and have ever pulled a big load I have crossed multiple states and multiple scales with big loads too. The best advice is to use the green book issued by the FMSCA not the guide you cited because it covers the regulations. You are correct tiedown equipment is labeled with WLL not breaking strength that’s why I corrected you misinformation to the proper information so that if someone is challenged in the roadside they can cover themselves.
I realize you live in a world where people worship you but most of see you for what you are, EDITED So why don’t you stick to the things you’re an expert in like metallurgy and physics and morality lectures and leave the trucken to us?Last edited by a moderator: Jun 8, 2019
