I don't care what YT videos says, press, dealer, I care what invoice for fuel shows. Sure, if you buy one, put an idiot behind the wheel, then sky is the limit, but a normal driver + demanding job (not flowers around Benelux), and there is no difference. We only sold it because it had 1,3 mil km and was E4. It also caused less problems than E5 Dafs around 750k km. Only 1 injector had to be replaced, two times clutch (once with flywheel), and that's about it.
Now I wouldn't buy one, strong 13 liter is more than enough, and I save more money by having 3 axle truck which is more economical on heavy loads, and I get better rate on it. That doesn't change fact that it was better on fuel than Dafs I have.

I had a friend who, unfortunately, bought a 2009 Volvo VT64T880 (I had to google the designation) several years ago. It had a 16L engine and would pass anything on the highway except for a shop and a fuel stop. That was Volvo's attempt at offering a niche truck to owner operators in north America. It was a huge failure and they quit building them.

I can only rely on my own experience, and what dealers from Scania and Volvo told me regarding 16 liters - don't go with highest hp output, if you really want, get biger displacement, but lowest hp output. That's the way to go, if you still want to make money. Atleast for standard trailers on 40-44 tons gross weight. -
Mid range is usually built well regarding performance vs fuel economy.
In mb with 580 you still get direct drive gearbox (2.733). 520 can get now fast diff if you want it (2.412)haycarter Thanks this.
