I don't think I've ever deliver from inside to inside.

The receiver always sticks them on the ground outside more or less.

Had one load to Seattle. Don't know why you tarped it. It was raining and they unloaded in the mud.

If youve got pictures of the condition of the load before it was loaded. Noted the bill of lading with the condition of the load. Then what is the question you are asking?

I picked up a load of threaded stainless steel rods this morning in LA. I'm parked at the customer in Union City, CA tonight. While the forklift driver at the shipper encouraged me to run the load without tarps, I tarped it according to the dispatch.

When you accept a load, you do everything required for that load. There's no way I will risk getting a claim for an untarped load when it is a requirement.

I would say if you loaded a dry rusty product and delivered a wet rusty product, you didn’t tarp the load very well.

Are they actually trying to charge you for sheets that were rusted? That is totally ridiculous, rust is a patina, it is something that occurs over time. I doubt very much that they got rusty while in you're possession. I also don't see a problem if you marked the bill of lading as product rusty. I've hauled hundreds of steel loads and the only thing I ever tarped were coils, most of them stainless(go figure). Somebody's trying to put the screws to you hand, don't let it happen, call the broker and demand payment, if they don't pay, sue them. I sure as heck wouldn't haul any more loads for anyone involved, JMO.

You make it sound like that "patina" is out of your hands... nothing you can do to stop it from happening...?

New fresh steel can rust in a matter of just a couple hours if it gets wet.

Also stainless isn't immune to weather damage or rust.

The point I was trying to make is you can tell how long the product was rusted by the amount and depth of the rust. Anything more than a film has been there for days, weeks, months, depending on the damage. Most of the steel I've hauled came from the hold of a ship and then sat in an open air whse, it had quite a bit of patina. And,even a film can damage steel, driver claimed it was already damaged and marked it on the BOL, unless I missed something..

Depending on the grade, yes. Pure stainless doesn't rust.To me, anything that a magnet sticks to isn't stainless, but most people don't know that,or care for that matter.

"Pure stainless doesn't rust... very fast" would be a more accurate way to put it ;-)
