What's job security if you hate your job and it makes you miserable? Find something you like doing, something you look forward to doing again after a week off, makes life easier. Money isn't everything and can you really depend on a state pension fund being around in 30 years? They're not getting self driving trucks off the ground, the first time one falls down the mountain into Denver and kills a few people and the lawyers start chasing everybody down to the individual programmers that'll be the end of them.

Most people don’t like their jobs. They call it “work” for a reason. Part of life unless you’re wealthy...
Lumper Humper, adayrider and TheyCallMeDave Thank this. -
Really, I rather like my job and I'm not anywhere close to what I would call wealthy.

While I agree with your argument, I have to wonder, if trucking is in OP's blood, why did he give it all up, including owing his own rig and having, as he described it, a "cake" local hauling job to start a whole new career, only to get himself into what seems to be yet another "cake" position, only to want to give THAT all up as well, to come back to this less than stellar industry? (Which is putting it nicely.)
A man is going to do, what a man is going to do, but I'd be asking myself serious questions before doing such a thing. It's not like we're talking about quitting a cashier job at Costco, or lumping boxes for 10 bucks an hour at the local warehouse. We're talking about walking away from what seems to be a solid career choice, that he consciously made the decision to pursue and climb the tiers of, AFTER running OTR for 3 years, and owing his own rig.
Is his current career that bad? Is it just boredom? Perhaps finding more exciting things to do outside of work? Has he felt like this for YEARS? Is this a sudden itch? If this is a reoccurring itch, why now, after working yourself into what seems to be a cushy position? I don't know to be honest, and I'm not really interested in arguing about another man's decisions, but if trucking really is in his blood, and he's got this serious itch to get back, why ever leave in the first place? He was in long enough to know if this was "for him" or not I'd say, and he ultimately gave it up to pursue something else. But it seems he really has no obligations at home and is debt free, and isn't wanting to make the switch for money, and isn't concerned with a potential pay cut, so in that case, it seems the answer is clear. If you want to hop back in a truck, more power to ya OP, and I wish you the best in whatever you decide to do.
That's unfortunately true most of the time. Everyone note I said "MOST" not all of the time.DTP Thanks this. -
Everybody is different, but in my way of thinking I can do exiting things besides work at whatever I do for work, why be miserable at work.
By your way of thinking, why is he wanting to return to the road, he tried something else, was also successful, but decided he isn't happy.jbird05031126 and Dan.S Thank this. -
Many drivers don't get the itch for running the roads as a trucker, until they don't have that career anymore.
BigDog Trucker, starmac, stillwurkin and 4 others Thank this. -
Correct, people are different, which is why I have a different opinion than you or the next guy. That's the beauty of a public forum. You don't have to agree with all opinions, but it's healthy to understand all points of view.stillwurkin, jbird05031126, Gearjammin' Penguin and 1 other person Thank this.

I know several people who've tried to quit OTR driving, it's like smoking to some people, it's a hard habit to kick.

Use some of that money to buy a modest camper and spend 3 nights a week in a sleeper.

If you love you're job, you'll never work a day in you're life.
