Prime is shifting to paperless logs. Its already started. How quickly? is a good question.
There were a handfull of us that started today... We are the pilot program and we all come from the same Company Fleet Manager.
We were told everyone will be switching, Company and Lease wide, eventually... And that we are getting ahead of the curve before it is mandatory industry wide.
Ive got an open mind... I pretty much log legal, so I am not concerned too much. I can think of few situations where this might get tricky, and had those adressed as a judgement call by the logs dept. on counting against me. but wide open for a DOT hit for 8 days... but those situations dont happen too often.
All I can say is if it goes industry wide, it will create and even playfield.

Sure, when every O/O has 2000 trucks to repower everything.
-
Don't be too surprised when it happens. I expect it within 2 years.

It's for the best if rates rise accordingly. No one WANTS to work 20 hours a day.
At minimum they're going to have to restructure the hour pattern to allow for more sleep combinations at layovers and detentions to make sure everyone can get their 11 hours driving in. This would fix a lot anyway. -
More than likely, it will require the dispatchers and load planners to actually use their brains. -
I can hardly type I'm laughing so hard. Use their brains, oh what a joke.
But for the subject, I have worked for a company that used paperless logs. I loved them. This was a regional grocery dist that did out and back, and layover loads. The downside is that I did 10 hours sleeper 45 minutes from the terminal one night when I ran out of hours.
There are ways to fudge here and there and pick up some extra time, but for the most part it logs it as it is. -
If that will be the case, then the entire effort will be a huge dismal failure and it has about as much chance of working as the milky way galaxy imploding into itself....... tomorrow morning. -
Yeah, if logs become an industry wide thing, I think it'll actually vastly improve the industry. Problem is those owner operators and single truck operations that simply can't afford it.
-
e logs will be the end of l/o's able to make any revenue, when you have to work soo hard on fuel economy to be able to make money, and freight prices continueing to drop, where's the revenue?
-
I totally do NOT get how people can deal with paperless logs unless they are owner/operators completely calling their own shots. I can't even count the number of times Swift had me somewhere on the east coast (or somewhere else where the parking situation was bad) picking up live loads at the end of my 14-hours, leaving me with a half hour to find a place to park for the night when there weren't any places left. (Of course, if you refuse the load or try to reschedule it so that you're totally legal, they let you sit for 48 hours.)
Anyway blah blah, I'm just griping....Last edited: Jul 27, 2009
