You show living in AZ. If you could get into a company that doesn't go west to CA and no further east than say OH, TN, and AL, then it might be worth returning. The problems faced in the new OTR are greatly increased when you start getting in the NE and west into CA. The near west to the midwest parking situation in much different than that in the east coast. And if you stay west of the "Big Muddy" your traffic is even better. And stay away from companies that think there expedited freight can't be late.
Good luck in your venture.
Just remember, when you quit your cushy government job, there is someone just waiting to take your place, so going back is generally not an option. You would have to seek a similar job in another location, and start at the bottom of the totem pole again.

Thanks, this is valuable advice. And you nailed it with the leaving the government job, its the management part that’s killing me. I got people above me who have zero urgency, and the workers below me that I manage that are impossible to terminate and replace because they made it past their probation somehow. It just takes the wind out of you when you try to get something done that should take 3-4 hours that takes 2 full work days to do...I have stories like this for days but I’m sure you all get the idea. You get beat down (verbally) from the public for the obvious stereotypes, and then your own workers/upper management for trying to do to much and that just burns you out. I’m trying to transfer to another local agency but if that doesn’t pan out, I’m really considering it.Ribeye Thanks this.

It's said to say but what started out as public service has become closer to pubic service. The wheels of bureaucracy turn slowly and people that run around in circles usually think they're "big wheels", pun intended.
x1Heavy, Ribeye, Midwest Trucker and 1 other person Thank this. -

Well, ask any dairy man, all grass is not even close to equal, and it only takes 2 days to find out you have got some bad grass. lol

How much is a “comfy salary”?
I wouldn’t be able to stand the over bloated hands tied behind your back beauacracy either. Maybe find a job using your skills in the private sector?
Maybe you should buy a truck and use your vacation to go play trucker? Or polish on it on the weekends. -
I heard hotshots have it better nowadays. Cheap motels, and they can get a cheap lizard every other night.
I always do 3 weeks in, 1 week out. And if you didn’t figure it out by now, brokers and dispatchers like to play the scarcity game. Whenever you say you’re taking a week off, that’s when these 1,500-2,000 mile loads show up out of nowhere. -
Yes ... I have left it several times and come back again. The more times I’ve come back the more fun and easy it gets. Technology makes it easier and easier ... E logs make it very easy. GPS makes it very easy. I retired a couple times with plenty of bank account so money is no problem for me , that might be the real reason I find trucking to be easy and fun now days. The best job in the world is the one you don’t need. Hakuna Matata mate
JoeyJunk and Tombstone69 Thank this. -
Life is much better when you can roll out of bed and know that you earn your living doing something that you enjoy. I’ve been behind the wheel of a truck for over 28 years and even with the new regs, yes even with ELD mandates, I still enjoy my job.JoeyJunk Thanks this.
