have seen this goin on for years in the military, marginally qualified minorities getting a promotion over a well qualified, white
i dont think the civil rights era laws have much usefull-ness left in them
just leave skin color out, and let the applicants stand on thier own qualifications, and let the cream (no that wasnt a racial remark) riseTexas-Nana, Owner's Operator, ironeagle2006 and 2 others Thank this. -
Most of the business owners in the Civil Rights Era are long dead by now. There may be a few "good ole' boys" left, but most of them are in their late 80's or early 90's. The majority of companies don't care about your race. They just want to know if you can do the job well. Me personally, I would rather get a job because of my experience and skills than because I am a minority. If someone else gets the job because of more experience or skills, more power to them! Congradulate them and move on. Especially in this case; firefighters, you want the most qualified watching your back, black, white, yellow, or brown. Just my two cents
leannamarie Thanks this. -
I think this is long overdue, I am just wondering how long it will take for some who I will refrain from naming to take this as some kind of assault on them. Color should have no merit in the hiring process, or the promotion process. If anything the current civil rights laws may in fact promote racism rather than work to end it.

Imagine this scenario.....
The government closes an emergency room down in say the middle of America because there are no minority doctors working there....leannamarie and Owner's Operator Thank this. -
Having worked in education for many years, I know that standardized tests are often flawed. Not biased per se, but they make mistakes.
So, are they saying blacks can't memorize stuff as well as whites?
That's a crock of crap! I'm black and I've always been rather good at rote memory. I'm not a fireman but I am guessing a supervisor, captain, or lieutenant has to be able to communicate effectively both in print and verbally. I would also imagine the job entails some paperwork. It can't all be just polishing fire trucks and rescueing babies from burning buildings.
How do they know about leadership in emergency conditions if they can't memorize?
Maybe I missed something and need to read the article again.
It seems to me that if nobody black passed the test, it's not the tests fault. Maybe I don't have all the facts, but if 20 white guys passed the test and there are 15 positions open, then the top 15 scorers should get those positions.
Working Class Patriot and leannamarie Thank this. -
This is exactly what Dr. King was striving for in his fight for equality.....
Somehow...as always.....wise observations or goals are misunderstood with poor judgment and good intentions...
