Most Important Questions From New Drivers Threads

Great advice GrumpyDad. That is why I am here. My husband has been out of work (construction) for the past 5 mo. Considering a carreer change from teaching to be with him since kids are grown and gone. We both want this. I am researching to prevent or lessen regrets.

 

I have been approved to get a CDL Class A license by the State WIA program. Unemployment could not find me a job and neither could I after one year of looking! I have an Associate degree and 25 years warehouse experience. I served in the United States Marines and was working with the VA administrator. Since I worked around truckers all day I thought I could learn to drive big rigs. I have 3 cousins that drive and several neighbors. My wife works, but I do not yet. If I find any job requiring a CDL license and they accept me....fine. Any income is better than no income.

Nobody owns the trucking industry.

 

"Any income is better than no income " Carriers love that attitude . The WIA program is the biggest waste of taxpayer money there is . 90% of students going to truck driving school won't be working in the trucking industry in 6 months . Starting wages at some carriers are the lowest they have been in 30 years . Carriers continue to take away benefits , eliminating holiday pay and stopping 401k contributions . Wannabes keep cutting their own throats and the throats of real truck drivers .

 

Lets not forget there are non-OTR jobs that require a CDL A.

There are also many options for using the WIA $$$, not just CDL training.

Just sayin'

 

What is a real truck driver? Is that a guy who drives a big rig?

Real truck drivers are out there doing the job getting loads where they need to be without their nose stuck in a GPS or somebody holding their hand and can back a truck to a dock or parking spot without a dozen pull ups . A very small percentage of wannabes get to be real truck drivers .

 

Well Rick I'm glad you are a "real truckdriver" and we dumm rookie drivers are just..............hmmm yeah Rick what are we?
I am really greatfull that you "real truckers" allow us to use the same highway.
But you know what Rick I've seen many "real truckers" using more pull ups than i did, and I've seen many "real truckers" doing really dumm things on the highway.
And another thing, how do you find your way to a new shipper or custumer?
Are you not using a GPS? And if you do, HOW can you use it without looking at it?
I know it is probably not a good idea to start something here, but I just wish nobody would make differents between truckdrivers, because WE all do that job for the same reason, to provide for our familys and make sure that our kids get the right education.
See Rick I have talked to many truckers with alot of experience, but did not find one with such a bad attidude torwards rookie drivers.
I know it must be hard to remember after so many years, but you know what, even you were at some point a rookie.
One last thing, I get my loads like you do Rick, and I am always on time, nobody ever held my hand while I was backing and I never needed a dozent pull ups and I am a proud TRUCKDRIVER.

 

Rick and others like him are cowboys that think the road belongs to them.
They must forget that onetime they once were Wannabes or just maybe they were born with a CDL and all of the god given skill that we all hope to acquire some day.
We should all pay Homage to Rick, (I wonder if I can get a little Rick statue to put on my dash)

 

Don't take it personal guys. You know what you're capable of doing and not doing. Rick is alittle rough around the edges, but he's a no bs kinda guy and tells it like it is.
