Gashauler, i appreciate the feed back. Unfortunately I am retired from Military service, and a bit over the age limit. It's old school truckers like you and the rest that makes this forum so user friendly. Again, I thank you for you feedback.

As well as Bagget,Ranger/Ligon and there is another I will not mention.
We hauled for 4 years during Desert Storm for a Company called Three Coast Carriers, others at the time were Lucas,Magill and Western.TSMT bought all three out to corner the market on Munitions Transport.
Minimum 8 week dispatch often being 12-14 weeks out.

Wicked cool freight and several experiences I'll never forget.

That's not the definition of a ghost driver at the FMCSA as most old timers here will agree

From what I've seen and heard you are correct. There is a hell of a lot more escort than whats noticeable.

Around here the air force does a lot of the local moves. Usually one, some times 2 helicopters, along with lots of ground escort vehicles.

That's what I thought this thread was going to be about. :biggrin_2559:

Regarding the actual thread topic though, I was also going to ask about these trucks as I have seen what I assume to be these (or similar) trucks several times in UT, ID & MT. It's obviously a military/federal vehicle, although there are no markings as such. It's a heavy trailer with quad axles (there's other "unusual" characteristics as well) and is always followed by at least one pickup with uniformed occupants.

Yep, and if someone tries to stop the Truck, Including Police, They will see the helicopter in no time flat. It must cost a mint to move one of those!

Sorry but these trucks are totally different than Tri-State. The trucks are under the contol of the Depepartment of Energy and have U.S. Government license Plates. While TSMT transport does haul alot of government loads they can not haul what these guys do.

You can see see the ghost train on this site but that's about as close as you'll see on the net. I can also tell you that's me in one of the top photos with the semi. So if you read a little about this site you then can figure what they haul. BTW those bombs on the trucks are the real deal. http://www.navynucweps.com/photo_archive_people.htm

Too much info a few years ago but not anymore. You can find out more by reading the link that Rick G left. But years ago yes we couldn't even say anything about them. If your family member has been there from the 70's and 80's I most likely ran into him. I was a Navy GMT and if he's been there awhile he should know what we did. The job I did was a GMT but it later changed to WT which stands for Weapons Tech. Plus I would like to invite him to join our association. It's the Navy Nuclear Weapons Association and he qualifies if he likes to join. There's alot of history there and he might know some people he'd like to contact.

There wouldn't be since the term ghost driver or ghost fleet are slang. You might know them as the Department of Enengy Courier Division or SST's. Anyway you would have no authority over them absolutely none so I would imagine there's nothing written about them in any of the rules or regulations.

I'll pass the Info along, We are All ex Military, and all were sensitive careers, He worked in protecting Nukes way back then when Reagan was in Office, I was in the 69th Bomb wing, and My other Uncle worked on the skin of the Stealth back in the early 80s when most people didn't know they existed. USAF. The one who drives as a Ghost driver went on to being a Police officer after the AF and then Recruited into what he is doing now, My other Uncle drives for Valley X, and I drive for a small private firm, It is weird how we all seemed to follow similar paths!

The one that protected the weapons can join the group but sorry the others can not. I gave my badge to the ones that protected what we did so he would know about the weapon tects. I started in 1970 and got trained at the joint service weapons school in ALB NM. I left for another career in 1983 but I was there when Reagan was around. In fact he made a visit to my ship the USS Constellation, the first President since JFK. But Reagan was also the one that took the weapons off the ships.
