I've already answered this...lol. Well, maybe not the "why" part, which is fuse before the inverter so the thing doesn't catch fire. I've installed my own after watching how it's done and asking questions. Have even been complimented on my installations. Have had the breaker trip on a couple occasions, usually while working with power tools.

Ok I missed part of your post, but you are right with an exception, you don't want to cut the cable a foot from the battery but want to have the fuse or breaker right at the battery. You want to eliminate any part that has a chance of turning the cable into a way to start a fire. As trivial as that sounds, there is a chance unless it is stopped at the source.navyvet5150, FlaSwampRat, roshea and 1 other person Thank this.

With some very expensive lessons.86scotty, TROOPER to TRUCKER and HoneyBadger67 Thank this.

I'd install a breaker under the cab near the batteries.
FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -
Have the dealer of your truck make install it professionally.
This is NOT to be fooled with, you can burn down that truck doing it wrong. -
That's not big enough. when 4 batteries are kicking a sleepy cat over... the amperage alone will burn though it.rabbiporkchop Thanks this.

I’ve done some research, and will install my own.Seems to be a lot of conflicting info, for such a simple thing. For that reason, I’ll do if myself. I give the OP credit, willing to ask questions and learn. Harbor Freight sells cable sets and advance auto sells 300 amp fuse for battery.
Trucker327 and JonJon78 Thank this. -
What does the starter amperage draw have to do with inverter amperage draw?
If the breaker is wired as a protection circuit for the inverter, I fail to see how it will get tripped when the starter is cranking.FlaSwampRat and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
Not sure why everyone here is making this out to be such a big deal... LOL. I think you'll do just fine.
I installed mine with cables purchased from the link that I posted above a couple years ago and my truck hasn't burnt down yet... Its really not that difficult.Dino soar, Trucker327, spyder7723 and 2 others Thank this.
