hello everyone, my husband spoke with me last night about him going to school for conway, i believe down in joplin. he mentioned this site which hes been visiting so i thought i'd take some time & research.... hearing about conway laying off scares me being we'd have to take out 1900 out of savings to cover cost. he did mention there was no up front contract. but does this mean he will have a job after school or is he better off with a contract guaranteeing he does have a job after school assuming he does graduate. i dnt expect to be problem being hes ex-military of 7 years, hard working not to mention stubborn in the sense he doesnt give up on things once started. any input would be appreciated he was told school has an opening i believe on the 25th of feb & they need to know soon what we want to do, my biggest concern is,would be the time we'll be apart & will he be able to get the miles to pay the bills, but since hes not working now & was self -employed & not bing able to draw unemployment, anythings better than nothing

WOW that is a tough situation to be in, for both of you. After reading your post though i get the feeling most of your initial questions are really for your husband. You two really need to sit down and talk about this situation and possible opportunity first. You have alot of concerns and aspirations that need to be dealt with first.

And pulling 1900$ out of a savings account right now in this economy and the way trucking is right now might not be the smartest thing to do. You all just might need this money down the road.

There are many companies that will pay to train....just have to sign on to the company for 1 year after training.
This may be a route for ya'll to go....no money paid for school, and job when training is done.
Good luck, and hope you find the answers you need.

I see your location is from Missouri. I don't know what companies hire from there, however, if your husband doesn't mind going over the road, he shouldn't have too much trouble finding a company that would pay for his training. CRST, Swift are some, but you have to call to make sure if that's still the case with the way the economy is. 1900 for school is not that bad, but with the company that pays that for you, you will have to stay with them until that balance is complete. Every newbie and seasoned trucker is struggling right now to keep his/her job or just to even get into the industry. It's a really hard time right now, as you know, for everyone in this country. This industry is really being hit hard. Also, if he does get a job over the road, just be prepared for him to be out for weeks on end. More than likely 3 weeks or more at a time. Best of luck.

Being in fear of today current financial situation of the country is probably a good thing. I would NOT take any money out of the bank for Conway school Normally Conway would be a very good choice, However they have been laying off drivers so even after school ho wont be working there. There in the Mighty Mo you have some companies down in Springfield area, IWX, Prime, Southern Cal Trucking, and R&R to name a few you can get in touch with. I dont personally reccomend cross country driving to guys that are married with children, As it will certainly test your marriage. It is not an easy life for the driver or the wife and kids.

The big deal here and probably for the next couple of years is to hold on to as much of your cash as humanly possible, Good Luck and God Bless...

There is a Conway thread here . Read it . Drivers have to wait 3 to 5 weeks without pay after orientation to get a truck . Recent posts said there are 140 or more drivers waiting for trucks .This was posted earlier today in the thread "What companies are actually hiring trainees during economic crisis ?"
Your husband does NOT want to go to a company that trains with a year obligation . Members here have been terminated from those companies before their obligation was fulfilled and were billed an average of $5,000 for their training . There are many members here that are recent graduates as well as experienced drivers that haven't been able to find work .

Conway layoffs are in LTL not over the road and also not doing school right now.

"i dnt expect to be problem being hes ex-military of 7 years,"

Does your husband have GI Bill benifits available to him. They won't help pay for CDL school but there are 3 companies out there that offer an apprenticeship program AFTER he has been through a school.

These three companies are Werner, Roehl, and TMC. The way it works is: You go to school and go to work with a company that offers the apprenticeship. You enroll through the trucking company with The VA, then you work as normal. You do nothing different from any other driver. You are paid at the same rate of pay as other drivers, and receive tuition reimbursement and bonuses just as other drivers do. The difference is, that you get an additional check every month from the VA. The first 6 months you will receive 1100 dollars and change each month and the second 6 months, the rate goes down to like 900 or somewhere in the neighborhood. If you or anyone else wants additional information or more specific information on this, I am happy to dig it up for you.

Her husband is currently working for Conway. He just completed his time with a finisher and is on the waiting list for a truck. It sounds like it might be a week or so...
