I think 6 months. But when i left they were starting a training program. It would be worth a call to recruiting. If they are hiring you would do well to get in there..

    Good luck to you!

I just quit Smith last month. Why? Because they hit me with a log violation for being 15 mins over when I told the night crew in the spring that I would have trouble finding somewhere to park in Mass after I dropped the load and was made to take it all the way. Then when you refuse to run over your hours to drop a load that you told them you couldn't make ontime, they hit you with a service failure. You might not believe me, but the load picked up at Coke there in Allentown going down to Suffolk, VA. I told them I would have 5 hrs left when I dropped my current load at P&G up in Tunkhannock. Now I wasn't allowed on the NE extension of the pike so I had to run 309 down thru Philly, then thru Baltimore, arund Wash. and then Richmond. Oh and the load was due to deliver at 0600. And if you drove for Smith I'm sure you know where the P&G plant is, not the warehouse. Them snow squalls can get intense on top of the hill. As far as the home time, right when I quit I had just gotten off the phone arguing with them about the 48 hr rule. I had a load that picked up at P&G in Lima before midnight of that day. They told me I had been at home way past the 48 hr mark and what do they do, take me off that load and put me on one that picked the next day. Funny, they tell me I've been home too long but take me off a load that picked up that day to put me on one that picked up the next day. Not to mention the idle rule if your truck doesn't have an APU. Seems a lot of companies are going to this, but I'm not freezing to death for no one in this world. And lastly, I was there for six months without an upgrade. Had to put my truck in the shop and took a loaner that was in worse shape than mine. Granted Barry does take care of his trucks, but the loaner had way more miles than my old one, not to mention it wouldn't pull a hill to save it's life. Then a week later they tell me that was my upgrade, some upgrade. I haven't tried to apply anywhere as far as driving so I don't know what my DAC looks like as I've been trying to find a job in town because of the nonsense you have to put up with. But it looks as if I will being going back out. But even if they screwed me by putting lies on my DAC, I hold the trump card and it's the ace. I'm not yelling or trying to start an argument, but they are definately the worst company I have ever worked for.

Why would you run down 309 thru Philly if you where loading at coke in allentown?

I still to date stand behind everything bad I originaly posted about Smith Transport out of Roaring Spring, PA. The latest Ive heard is all is continuing just as it did when I worked for them, low mile runs, poor home time restart and out only to get another series of short runs that dont amount to squat at the end of the week in your pay. In addition when you leave them I have heard from several different guys that they screwed them on thier dac. One particular was a guy that went to Erie PA just after a snow storm. He made it to deliver and found the dock area unplowed, it was a below grade dock with a ramp descending down on an incline as many are. He informed the customer he would probably get stuck if he tried to back in and they wouldnt have it plowed. He called dispatch and told them of the situation, they told him to back in if he got stuck the customer would be responsable for getting him out. He did get stuck, and ended up needing pulled out with a wrecker! He worked several more months for them, then quit. When he went to get another job he found out Smith called that an accident and put it on his dac! Nice huh!!! Thats just one story, Ive heard many others just as dirty since I left Smith. Dont let anyone tell you different, Smith is definately bad news and recomended to all to stay clear of them.

Maybe if you had read my post, I said we was not allowed on the turnpike unless we wanted to pay for it out of our pockets. I'm not paying no tolls out of my pocket for any company out there.

U.S. Xpress bought some controlling stock, word at the home office b4 I left was that ol Barry was running short on cash and didn't want to lose(sorry about the typo) the company. Which I can't blame him for that. I don't know if the money story is true or not, just something I overheard in the shop one night.
