A few months ago I stayed at a truck stop in Paducah, KY that also had a truck driving school there that shut down. Yes its now MTC that bought it, and reopened it. At the time I was there as a truck driver, a ton of students were sitting outside where they have the class room, and a brawl started. I had been walking by to go to the restaurant that was there (don't know if they reopened that or not since then), and upon entering the restaurant, sat down to eat. I was told that the brawls were the norm there, and that living conditions were despicable for the students too. I went to MTC in Hazelwood, MO in March of 2006, and I DO NOT RECOMMEND GOING TO IT EVER. The cost is double of not almost triple of other places, the living conditions are beyond intolerable, & the food they provide twice a day 6 days a week, I wouldn't even feed it to my dog or my worst enemy. Sundays you had to provide your own food with only one convenient store there and NOTHING ELSE AROUND. You are treated like trash, and you do more walking than anything else. I became very sick the last few days there and almost passed out. I asked to go lay down and Joan in the office told me if I did, she would take away me going to take my CDL test that was scheduled in 3 days. I stayed out there walking another 2 hours being helped to stay on my feet by two other students. Once she & the office personell left, the instructor told me to go lay down. I was still very sick 3 days later but did pass my CDL. Also if you are sick? You and you alone must provide your transportation to the hospital which I couldn't do as I had no car & no one else did neithor, and also had no money to pay the $20 something to a taxi one way. (I had called and asked the price). Upon getting home from MTC I immediately went to the doc as by then I was beyond sick, miserable, and never felt like this. It was worse than flu feelings. I had diabetes. The food at MTC or lack of it, plus the quality of it had made what I didn't know I had become totally uncontrollable. Believe me--I was furious. MTC also "contracts" you with the worst companies. The bottom of the barrel companies.
Another word of warning. You supposedly have your school paid off within 14 months if you survive working where they place you? Each and EVERY ONE of the people (7 of them) that I have kept in contact with still owe. Two stayed where they were placed for the 14 months, got the school paid off--then were billed for the interest to come out of their own pockets. So no!!!! It is NOT paid off after those 14 months. They have so many loopholes you owe alot more than you signed up for and owe it long after the 14 months. Me? I wasn't going to work for swift and quit a week and a half later. At least I had the smarts for that beginning of my driving career even tho I didn't for going to MTC. If I knew how to do the URL thing I would put some pretty shocking photos on here of the rooms that leaked and had black mold in them, the hotel they put us up in, and the yard conditions. Please everyone--DO NOT BE SO DESPERATE TO DRIVE THAT YOU GO TO MTC!! I'm going into the end of my 2nd year of driving and still regret that day almost 2 years ago!! Check out the BBB in MO for MTC. Check out www.ripoffreport.com on them. Check this sight too!!
How about MTC?

WOW! I need to open a truck driving school!
But seriously, to the original poster. If possible I would wait a few months and see what shakes out with this economy. Five or six grand is allot of money to fork out right now, to go work in an industry that is now implementing hiring freezes and laying drivers off. Allot of qualified competition out there fighting for a limited number of seats.
Just my .02

Seeing school is the only way I'm going to get my A, I gave MTC a call.I'm not going to be chained to some company for a year so I asked about federal/state programs. He said they have state and federal programs that will pay for school and in fact most people were taking that route there. I don't know if it's BS or not but I might check out there next openhouse to see. Anybody know about these Govt. programs?
-
Yes thats the only way I would go as far as getting a CDL. I'm not sure what your state calls it but I think it's federal funds so the program should be the same just about everywhere. It's called W.I.A. short for workforce investment act. Go to your local state unemployment office or state employment office. Ask them about it.
I did and it was the best step I could have taken. Yes you have to jump through a few hoops to do it. They don't just give the money to you. But it's so worth a few weeks of BS to get them to pay for it. My license cost me $500 of my own pocket and the rest was paid for. I owed nothing for my cdl when I got it.
PLEASE ANYONE WHO IS LOOKING TO GET THERE CDL PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS PROGRAM IT WILL SAVE YOU MONEY AND YOU. I WILL GIVE AS MUCH INFO AS I KNOW IF YOU NEED HELP. -
I have never dealt with a school before that was so unprofessional. They tell you on the phone you will get a prehire with a company and then you go thru all the things you need to getting them all your info and then come to find out they try and tell you, you must come up with a down payment and that could be anywhere from 500.00 up to 1500.00 and they want you to pay before you start your training with them . Then you give them the benefit of the doubt and then you go to the school and then the next thing they do is send you home for some stupid reason and tell you , you lost your down payment. I really do stress to all to stay the hell away from MTC TRUCK DRIVING TRAINING CENTER. They are in Hazelwood MO. Intodays ecomony no one needs to be treated like crap or ripped off and that is exactly what MTC does. BE AWARE BE SMART DO NOT GO TO THE SCHOOL

Why were you sent home from MTC?
