Height is might with antennas if you will. Shorties do shortie trips, and 2 miles isn't squat. Magnets suk, IMO.
And you should NEVER run an untuned antenna. I know you meant the radio though. -
if you can get 2 miles out of it with a stock radio your antenna is just fine. wilson makes a "lil wil" which is 36" or you can opt for a wilson 1000 or 5000 magnet.

Not in my neighborhood. You wouldn't be heard.

exactly. 2 miles sucks...
I just replaced my astatic antenna with a francis 5 foot (i think...) and I was sitting on exit 212 around my hometown and talking to someone on exit 205 easy. that's still only seven miles but i am just using that as an examples... and all i have is a peaked out cobra 25 ltd classic.
getting the palomar next week though.....

Personally, I'm glad for all the 2 mile radios, since I live 2.2 miles from the interstate. I can call my friends right on 19 and hear them since my ears aren't plugged. I get in the truck and head for the big road and the radio comes alive the closer I get. Wife says she can hear me 5x5 12 miles away.

It's a lot of fun. I know a lot of folks around my County that have base stations that they talk on at night, and sometimes it's fun to just go hang out in the truck and shoot the bull with them. I'm wanting to add that Palomar because that way my signal would be stronger as well as my ears. There are some base station in th e next county or so that I can hear but they can't hear me a lot of times.

2 miles? I was in Fort Worth Texas yesterday, and there is this guy over in Dallas that go's by Jesse James, that I could hear real good! I don't know what kind of antenna he uses, but I was over 40 miles away from him, and he was still coming in strong. I couldn't get back to him, but I have herd this guy before when I'm in the Dallas area, and it don't mater what part of town your in, he's always the loudest radio on the air. I use to think he was on a Base radio, but I did hear him say he was moblie...So I know there are antenna's that will get you herd over 2 miles away.

k...checked 2day...got maybe 3 miles on radio check. thats it thou...then lost him
.
i know you guys got GREAT units out there, get 5-7 miles maybe more. i just would like to get the same. i want to start with antenna. then maybe peak and tune unit.i need basics 1st
...antenna!!! then maybe, maaaybe send it to the guy to tune and peak it.
so...longer antenna DOES help?
a peak and tune will HELP distance as well?
starting with antenna ONLY,considering distance i get now....will i get further then 3 miles?
txs all in advance....

The taller your antenna, then the more range you should get. As long as you take it to someone who knows what they are doing, they can peak and tune your ears to hear farther as well as your output signal. mine is just peaked and tuned with a tall antenna and I can hear people way far away and most of the time they can hear me.
