Unless the self-check system has a malfunction and self-reports everything to be in perfect working order, or the malfunction causes the self-check to not run, and it doesn't alert you to the failure...

If all of these electronic systems were fool-proof, why are we required to carry paper logs with our ELD? Why is a "driver" still required to sit behind the wheel of allegedly autonomous vehicles? Even planes require a pilot to be at the controls just in case the electronics flying the plane decide to crash it.
