Looking for your first hand knowledge and insight, please. I am a reporter with the Globe and Mail and I am researching a possible indepth, investigative story about trucking firms hiring international students and temporary foreign workers, who are perhaps underqualified to drive truck in Canada. Particularly in BC. If you can help with my research, please email me ktomlinson@globeandmail.com. Thanks!

Just take a drive on any BC highway and you'll see how many hacks are driving truck today.

Start with research on licences that were revoked due to student/school/employer/inspector falsification/collusion.

Okay, I confess, not first-hand, but even without the falsification/collusion as has occurred, it has been stupidly-easy to get a Class 1.

I do have first-hand knowledge of TFWs that, while qualified to driver, were here under false LIMAs and were, effectively, indentured servants.

Thanks for this. I'd like to talk to you about these false LMIAs if I could. Please can you send me an email and we can go from there? Maybe you can help me narrow my research etc ktomlinson@globeandmail.com

Hi again. I don't want to be a pest but if you could send your email/phone number or email me so we can connect further that would be great.
I will be on holidays starting this week then on a work trip but will be back working on this full time early August. Would really appreciate it if we could connect. Thanks again!

To further add to the LMIA topic, a person doesn't have to dig too deep to see how rampant falsification is. Part of the process requires posting a job ad on Canada job bank. Seems to be a discrepancy between the labour markets of indeed.ca and cjb in terms of "experience required" and "languages spoken".

When I was newly-licensed and looking for work I couldn't help but notice that Canadian job bank had substantially more driving jobs that didn't require any experience, yet required proficiency in English and Punjabi. I never saw these ads on indeed or other job sites, and of course I never got any response from any of these companies who were willing to hire without me having experience.

    Just a hunch..

You can take a drive to any truckstop. Say West Memphis Arkansas. Sit down and survey the dining area. (If there is still one...) you will see that Blacks and whites are sometimes in the minority as are American born and raised some hours of the day.

This is not a racial attack or anything. Just a statement of what percentage of people in trucking that are from Overseas or dress to follow their religion etc. It is not difficult at all to understand when you hear a African, Eastern European, a touch of Russian or even some Arabic or some form of such more than you hear down home plain American. It is not difficult. Just a few minutes of your time on the road to the nearest truckstop that has any number of people 24/7

We in our towns and county here in Arkansas are increasingly seeing foreign nationals come here and establish a apartment or such as they might on the welfare and soon. With increasing numbers others join them. Next thing you know in ten years you are living a block away from what they would call "Little Mexico" in Little Rock. Easy. I don't mind people coming here to make a home and do well, we are a nation of immigrants since before we were a country. Unfortunately the next ten years we may find that it's necessary to organize a robot based trucking logistics where humans are too expensive to hire due to inflation.

I went to college until 2004. Arkansas increased the H1b workers visa for People to come here from India and work in jobs equal to the internship work that I would have been doing that year. Only they now have the job for less cost than what they would deal with me and go back to India and train others of their homeland in the technology they learned here in Arkansas.

That was a turning point. Within the hour I had gone to the Administrator and withdrew from my college and that's the end of that effort in IT. STudent loans were paid off 7 years ago to the tune of 46000 USD. One 4 year with my spouse, worthless and one partial from me, also worthless. And also obsolete.

It would have been far better never have to gone to that college and used the 46000 over three years to build on to the house or some other form that benefits us directly, maybe some additional forestry acres and so on. Who knows.

its no secret ..the way I was told was student comes to Canada from india lets say student allowed to work x amount of hrs to survive ,student gets class 1 (paid for by local temple) at local "training company" backed by temple, student /company applies for TWP as has Canadian experience ,friend at temple has truck needing driver, student then gives up college for full time work, . $ months earlier student couldn't spell truck never mind driven one. Now you say this sounds like BS I was told this by a laughing "Indian" that only idiots from Europe did it the correct way to immigrate.,,,,at least any jamaicans ,phillis I met had driven trucks back in their homeland.

The Sikh Temples are a religious and social center all rolled into one. Sikh life revolves around their religion and the tenets they put forth.
They began helping each other when no one else would because of racism and envy, and the fear of something different.
They had networking honed down to a fine point before it was ever a buzzword.
