I'll have to agree with it being easy to work on. I changed a turbo on a off ramp myself. You can pretty much climb all over, around, under, through, and where ever else you think you need to be. Not alot of body roll... but gotta remember when #### starts to pop.. let up on it. I wouldn't mind trying a flattop out for awhile.

Once a Lightning Ten transmission has the seal for the speedometer sensor break the transmission is pretty much done for. I wouldn't spec any top two transmission 10, 13, 15, or 18 in a truck. They are like playing Russian roulette with a five shot revolver loaded with three rounds when it comes to your chances of getting a reliable one.

What the heck is a top two transmission? Top two gears overdriven? Overdriven countershafts?

You are asking a question of roughly a 3 year thread.

Top two, as i understand it contains either underdrive or overdrive. I am accustomed to 13 speeds having underdrive in top two gears. When you lug down uphill you lift foot at torque wait for it to shift half a gear for you and floor it. When you run out that gear still uphill, you make the shift. The top 12 will be waiting for you.

It's a ease of labor thing. In those days like on the Reo, there are two selectors on that stick for us and it's busy. As from about the mid 50's era. Not very fast. But I would not be afraid to take that to California. Just on say a two week schedule ha...

I have had my fill of 10's anything. The worst ones for me is when you have to get out of 5th low back across the entire box and go into what should be granny low for your 6th. If the transmission has been abused, I will scratch it. So I undershift those things during road test for that particular gear.

My favorite is the rockwell 9, 13's Mack 15 as goes on the SL 500 and so on. Shorter gears, the better options you have of either stopping the earth or moving it. Rather than the company cookie cutter tall gears spend all day waiting for that wind out and then shift. Sometime in the next state. And they wonder why I burn fuel in those... in certain areas of the USA.
