Axle weight question.

Thats crazy is that just a state by state thing or is it fed regulation

Wow that is crazy , especially since ive never heard it and ive definstly pulled hundred of loads that was more than 34k on 10ft spread. I guess it wouldnt matter tho as long as im within the 20k on each axles limit for 10ft spread, correct? Learn something everyday, thanks for the info my friend

 

Yep keep it under 20k per axle and your golden. The tricky part is keeping the axle load balanced. I know the trailer I used to pull did not balance correctly over about 38k and I was over 20k in the front axle. The rear axle was sliding and had different size bags. If I owned the trailer I think a 1/8” or 1/4” plate above the bag as a shim would have fixed the problem.

 

WY will nail you for being over 20k on an axle even if you’re under 40k on the spread.

BC and AB also don’t recognize spread axles, they give you 20k for the group. I’m not sure about SK. They also don’t recognize lift axles, so if it can be manually lifted it has to be in the air in Western Canada.

 

Wyoming has given me problems in the past for just that.

 

96" or less = 8' or less. Look at the chart I posted. >8' to 9' allows you 38K. >9' to 10' allows you 39K. >10' allows you to run 40K. That's why it's generally a 10'2" spread, to get the full "2 single axle" weight of 40K. If you're just barely 10' (and not a hair over) on the spread, a "by the book" cop could enforce the 39K on you.

 

So a 10'1" I had up north on a 48 foot with 40K on the back perfect 20 and 20 on the dot to the pound, throw a bible on there and it's overweight. And they will refuse to accept that?

I did just about all of my flat down south what with the pipe and the steel out of the midwest and the aluminum in Kentucky and a couple of other places that made coil out of it. (West of frederick has been shut down for years when the Indian Point Power Plan failed them.)

I recall hopping onto Vicksburg scales and it comes out pretty much on the dot. Not a word anywhere. Provided they can see a Gator between those axles back there... //tease

I generally dislike back heavy trailer dating from hauling full containers of ball bearings on the back of the tri axle chassis making for a great deal of gym work in the tractor for me. (Non power steering)

 

Totally depends of what state you're in.

 

Most trailers I’ve seen are listed as a 10’ 2” spread. They add that extra 2” to make sure you are over 10’.
