You need to state some more facts, like how much per mile you pay your drivers. I think some companies try to pay cheap wages but want the cream of the crop. I am not saying that your company is one, but this information needs to be factored into the equation.

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.
I have to play the devil's advocate here...

I believe there may be 2 sides here. No doubt there were problems with the drivers, but I really doubt the company was a gem to work for. If it was the drivers would most likely have been more satisfied.
-
And you can see the thread changing already with the same crap that the thread started with......There MUST be something wrong with his company for these drivers to act this way...... Once again, the shifting of responsibility from the driver to the company begins. Grow up, do your #### job, and everything else will fall into place........ Let the flames begin.
Bigray, Flyer, truckerwannab and 6 others Thank this. -
I see your point. But is it not possible that there are 2 sides like I pointed out?
If you have 6 drivers or 4 in this example and they are all bad, one wonders what the problem is. Most likely it is more of the drivers, but be realistic. -
Don't forget, sometimes it's not the companies who have this policy, it's the insurance companies who dictate who the trucking company can hire. This is a discussion that I've had with many people involved in the hiring and it's not their idea not to hire people like you, it is the insurance company that they use. Their hands are tied.

Here's your flame......
The VERY first comments agreed with the original poster and his examples.
Let's say I accept your post as the gospel. It would be about as wise as putting a set of wiper blades on a billy goats ###.
Why? You haven't even driven a truck long enough to have an opinuon yet. And no, it isn't like any other job.
It seems to me, you don't like anyone having a differant version of the story. Are you Union? -
Happened to me. I was offroad for 7 years and everyone wanted to treat me like a rookie. Pissed me off, but what could I do?
Anyways, its crunch time. 1 good driver is equal to 3 slackers. For years, companies thought that they could get by crapping on drivers. A crappy company will have crappy drivers. Crappy drivers give crappy service and crappy service loses accounts. Bottom feeder companies lose accounts and their drivers sit more.
Now, everyone is hiring only experienced drivers. Why? You can only drop the rates so much. In order to keep their accounts, theyre going to have offer better service than the next company. You need better drivers in order to offer better service. Piss on a good driver and he will walk. Piss on a bad driver and he probably wont notice the smell. The trucking companies realize that they are in a bind, they just dont know how to fix it yet.
Everyone working for a company with more than say 750 trucks, mark my words: Theyre going to do it again. They cut drivers saying that theyre downsizing the fleet, yet theyre still hiring experienced drivers. There was no downsizing, theyre just trimming the fat. This is their way of stocking their fleet with quality drivers.
I also believe thats why companies are pushing their lease-purchase program so much. You have all heard that a lease-driver is a company driver that is paying for the truck. Its true! Get into a lease and not be a top driver, you will sink yourself in a month. They wont have to do anything. On order to make it, you have to run hard ALL THE TIME. You cant stay home and you cant go home often. Problem solved for the big company. Smart move on the company's part if you think about it. Not so smart move on a driver's part, BUT right now the only way you can get hired with just about any company is if you agree to do a lease purchase deal.
The only guys that can really call themselves owner operators and do what they want are the guys who OWN their rigs. If they want to go home, they can go home. It wont sink them. -
Flame acknowledged and your points taken... You are right that I have not driven that long... my opinion comes from life experience, not trucking. In every occupation it is the same: lack of responsibility and self accountability. But that appears to be the country in a nutshell at present..the new mantra of " Its not my fault"... My apologies for a post that came off wrong and didn't mean to offend anyone. By the way....Not Union....but thanks for asking......dancnoone Thanks this. -
I disagree, you know when your hired how you are going to be paid whether it be p/m or %, at that point you drive... anything in between is just trucking, i.e. traffic, shippers taking forever, etc. etc.
any person, worth their weight should have a sense of pride in what they do from start to end. and not midstream decide he's getting screwed, then want to change the agreement. / then hold the load hostage till he gets what he want's, i.e. as a example...
the author of this thread gave enough info. IMHO...luvtheroad Thanks this. -
TO the author of this thread, based on your account of these scenario's i think you handled it correctly.
never give your employer a ultamadum, that dog dont hunt with me either.
quitting without appropriate notice or under dispatch is not ACCEPTABLE.
dilly dallying and del. late is also not acceptable, unless their is circumstances out of the drivers control. i.e. mechancial,tires...
any driver out here that cant make it too payday needs to figure out how too make it too payday without taking advances.. imo..
