If black smoke equals wasted fuel and one wants it for show only, the logical thing to do would be to have some sort of smoke switch so that one is only wasting fuel when one wants to put on a show.

The smoke switch is basically give too much fuel before the turbo can catch up. If you are gentle with your right foot and only give what's appropriate for the amount of boost it's like the "smoke switch" is off.

If you only ever drove a slug then it might be hard to understand.

Just stumbled on this old post and noticed V8Lenny didn't ever reply!!! I guess now he has worked it out and probably embarrassed himself.
I could add so much more to this but time doesn't permit nowadays sadly but at least in 2019 you guys can get some decent Injectors done outside of Caterpillar.

I will however ADD one more thing as people STILL don't seem to understand this part!

Let's say with a STD Injector the fuel position may float @ 1.7mm to maintain a smooth Idle.(keeping in mind the lowest it can go depending on ECM and flash file is @ 1.2 > 1.3mm)

So we fit a larger injector!!! The algorithm in the ECM stays the same but the ECM MUST reduce the Fuel position due to the larger injector.. so maybe 1.5mm (depending on size)

Now let's put in a BIG FAT injector say a 2113028... Again the ECM must drop the Fuel position even lower..(remembering it can't drop below 1.2> 1.3mm depending on Files used) IF it wants to idle at the same Target RPM.

However the injector size is too great for the minimum Fuel position so the RPM cannot drop by way of Fuel position only so it starts to drop out Injectors. and runs rough. The same with Coasting. .u get that rough miss like feeling.

This can usually be identified by simply cutting out 1 Injector and the load on the engine due to 1 injector short will then be sufficient to idle smoothly. Keep in mind also if the engine is HOT it will vary, Compressor engage it will vary ect etc. This leads to guys saying it was running OK but now it's rough!!!

I have always learned a lot from reading your posts both directly from reading and researching the hints you give. So a big thanks!
Curious who you recommend for a decent Cat injector in US?

    SL3406 and black_dog106 Thank this.
