I just started trucking and claim CA as my residence because my parents live there. Looking at my paycheck it seems CA is taking 100$ a week in income tax, something I really want to change. I am OTR and will probably never have an apartment or a house for many years, I want to know how I can change my residency to a state with no income tax, like Texas or Washington, or can I claim being homeless and have no state which is technically true. The problems I see are that I wont be able to prove residence in any other state because I cant get more then a PO box, and that I already proved residence in CA to get my commercial license here.
State income tax too high

@Chinatown i think knows a way around this. I THINK tho if you get a mailbox at a UPS Store it counts since you are able to show a physical address. I’m not 100% certain on that though so maybe I’ll just shut up.
COBB2070 and Toolmaker96 Thank this. -
First you get a P.O. Box, not a regular P.O. Box but a P.O. Box that shows a physical address like 123 any street any town USA 99999, then you get a CDL from another state that has no state income tax. The P.O. Box needs to be in that state.
Boom your good to go.rabbiporkchop, Puppage and jday1 Thank this. -
I do not have a home, my home is my semi truck. With that said I have a P.O. Box at a business called Old Town Mailhouse in Grants Pass, Oregon. My Drivers License has the address of this business as well as the P.O. Box (it is listed as an apartment number). It is VERY legal and I have never ever had any problems.
Come up here to Oregon, get a P.O. Box, get some junk mail with proof that you have this "new address" and after that go on over to the Oregon DMV and get a new CDL.
By the way the Old Town Mailhouse does forward your mail to another address of your choice if needed.Last edited: Jul 26, 2019

I know first hand that a PO box does not count as a physical address. Neither does a ups store box number. You may use either as a business mailing address but not as your home.

Every state has cheap one room apartments. I think they're called flophouses. All you have is a bedroom that you may or may not be allowed to have a hotplate and/or refrigerator in and you share a bathroom. Your mail will get stolen there, so you'll also need that PObox for that.

I think I have a loose plan and would like feedback, I found this site that does online PO box's with a physical address located in TX. Pricing I would get that move all my mail to that address, wait 30 days until I actually get mail and then apply for a TX drivers license. I think after 6 months I would be a resident of TX and shift my income tax over to Texas and save 100$ a week. Plausible?

Everything sounds plausible. The execution is where the trouble lies. I do know that neither UPS nor USPS addresses work.

I think South Dakota only requires a PO Box & it's a no-income tax state.
Many California truckers are changing their address to Texas or Nevada.
A few on this forum used Escapees RV Club to switch to Texas & Florida. Membership gives you a legal Texas or Florida address.
Couldn't get that "Pricing" website to open; want to check it out.Last edited: Jul 26, 2019

Move to Arizona. We're pretty reasonable. Can't imagine why you don't want to give $5K year to the state.Aamcotrans, Western flyer, Snailexpress and 2 others Thank this.
