Hi ya'll....I just graduated from driving school in Florida and got my FL CDL with an Orlando address. I am what I heard somebody in another post refer to as "vagrant". I do not have a permanent residence and am currently living with relatives. I have been applying to many companies and I have been getting the "we are not hiring out of Florida right now" line. So I started asking if they were hiring out of Alabama and a lot started saying yes.

My question is: Can I stay in Florida, get an AL address and then change my FL CDL to an AL CDL even if I don't actually live in AL, rent a house, etc.? Then reapply to the different companies as an AL resident. I have a friend that has "lent" me his home address in AL and this permits me to get my AL CDL. I understand I would have to pay state taxes for AL but I do not care as long as I get a job. I can change back to FL once the economy straightens out.

The companies say that they need my CDL address to be able to get me back home even though I have been as clear as possible that I do not care where I take my days off. I figured that once I get a job and start moving to orientation, training and then hopefully solo I could get back to Florida every 6 months or so or get my kids to come visit me wherever I'm at.

Any suggestions or comments will be more than welcome.

go for it! If he will lend you the address. you really dont live anywhere anyway. as long as you stick to your story. an officer asks you where you live, and you say FL, he might not like it.

Your legal address is where you receive your mail and a post office box number will not suffice for a legal address. To that end, your legal address would be in FL. It could get you into monetary trouble doing it that way.

If the only place he recieves mail is a po box, then what do you do?? He will really have no home, a truck thats it. Put one of your buddies bills in your name, and there you go, you are an AL resident. Like I said, keep your mouth shut about FL and you will be fine.

Won't using a PO box jeopardize per diem?

I guess you don't ever want to go back to florida for hometime?

It is not that I don't ever want to go back to Florida for my breaks...but as the economy stands today, I am willing to put in a good years work on the road till I get my 12 months experience and then I can get pickier and go with a company that will hire me out of Florida. The other alternative is after putting my time in with whoever hires me relocate my address to Florida.

And by the way, I am not planning on using a PO Box address. I am going to use a physical house address but not necessarilly reside there permanently.

Thanks for the input to all who have replied

Check with FL, but in my CA CDL I used a utah mailing address for a couple of years. At DMV I told them I lived in CA but, need my mail to go to Utah. No problem.

I lived in AZ, when I worked for werner, and took most of my hometime in AZ, but every so often, I wanted home time in VA, FL, MO. they never questioned me. Sometimes if I had a good load 2500+ miles, I would request hometime at its destination so they wouldnt jerk it from me!! LOL
