picked up a trailer yesterday. Slid tandems. 1 individual tandem pin the back one on my drivers side, didn't come back out. The other 3 did. I've had this happen before and I drove down the road and it'll be out by the time I stop again.

Wel, this time that 1 pin still will not come out like it should after driving 400 miles with it retracted through the mountains of Kentucky/Tennessee (oops).

Is there an easy way to fix this? When they won't retract I just hammer away at them but how the hell can I get the thing to come back out? Is it safe driving with only 3 pins out like they should be instead of 4 (I'm at 37,000 pounds 74,500 gross weight)?

Get underneath and take a picture of the inside of the pins. There’s a reason why the pin hasn’t popped back out. Usually, it’s a simple fix. If the holes are aligned, pull the handle and try shoving it back in.

Thanks fellas. I tried pushing in the red knob and giving it fuel for a few minutes, retracting the pins then pulling the knob back out to make the pins come out like normal.

That made it worse and now both passenger side pins won't come out along with the 1 tandem pin on the drivers side that wouldn't normally come out.

I drove it around the parking lot to get air flowing through it and also gave it some more air by pushing in the red knob again, but the passenger side pins still won't come out like they should. So now I'm down to 1 pin that's out.

So I checked it into the shop here at loves.

For future reference though, you guys have driven with only 3/4 of the tandem pins released? If this happens again what specifically should I be looking for and are there easy fixes like when they won't retract I just beat them with a hammer once or twice?

On older trailers, it's not unusual for the pins to have grooves worn into them. Sometimes you can just hit the face of the pin with a hammer and they pop out. Other time you have to hammer/pry from the back to get the groove on the pin to release from slide rail.

As far as driving with 3 of 4 locked, you'll not have any issues unless you get on really uneven ground. Then, it is possible to get the tandems off the track. And it goes without saying the DOT won't be happy to see 3 out of 4, either; although the OOS standard is "More than 1/4 of locking pins not engaged"

You do have a copy of the CVSA OOS criteria, don't you? Every driver should know this better than the DOT does. ftp://ftp.odot.state.or.us/mcarrier/Aspen/North%20American%20Standard%20Out-Of-Service%20Criteria.pdf

My old trailer did that. Air slide great when it works, they get old pita. I used to beat them out, They will shut you down for 1 of 4 not engaged.

Lock the trailer brakes. Get in the truck and with the truck in reverse, nudge the trailer lightly. This should unseat the pins if they have grooves on them. Tho this was why I had a 3 pound landscaping hammer in the truck.

I can tell y’all ain’t no trailer mechanics. Don’t beat the pins with a hammer, that just makes things worse. Call your road service dept and get it fixed right.

At least that one pin and the spring behind it should be replaced.
