as far as that engine i don't know alot about them, but i do know 80% of rated horsepower is within specs for most engine manufactures. if u are buying the truck the dealer should give u all the ecm printouts u want, parameters, ecm miles, they should be able to do a history (trip report) on it to show fuel mileage.. u going to need to put some miles on the oil before a oil sample would really show anything.

Right, I learned that today. The dyno sank my interest in buying this otherwise low mileage truck. The salesperson insists I made a mistake, but collective wisdom of the mechanics I know, including a volvo mechanic, found a negative recommendation. I'm looking for an Cummins ISX in the Volvo 780 body. There is no doubt that Volvo makes the best body design, although a lot of guys think they are ugly.

I looked at Kenworth, and like Peterbilt, I was left scratching my head wondering how the truck could be so loved. The low cab ceiling, the front wheel fenders that are out of the driver's view, and other such ergonomic problems seem to be with Kenworth and with Peterbilt. But, each to his own, I guess.

Ok, now I've found a beautiful 2005 Volvo vn780 with a 500hp (rated) Cummins ISX motor...good price too, or is it?

I'm a California-based driver and have to plan for CARB compliance, and from what I understand, the 2004 engine (that's in the 2005 body, since they always are a year behind) will be compliant until 2013. That's only 4 years service, before I have to spend money on a smokestack filtration system (which will screw up engine performance, probably). Buying a 2005 or 2006 model engine only gives me one more year down the road.

Should I finance for a 2007 or later truck? Or, should I bargain down the price on the truck, regardless of the beautiful chassis and interior?

Your best choice would be to wait until the SCR systems come out in 2010. The Cummins would be a great choice, plus you'll be up on your epa and in my opinion have better hp and fuel economy than any 02 and later engines.

I wanted to buy the vehicle in cash and not take out the rip-off trucker loan, which is like 10% APR or more per year. Even so, I did consider trying to buy a 2007 or later motor that is fully carb compliant, but these vehicles are about twice the price of an 04-06 motor.

Freight shakers and Peterbilt? No, thanks. These may be popular among the cowboy truckers, but I prefer tech oriented and ergonomically sound engineering...The 500 ISX Cummins ought to be decent enough on power and reliability, without burning up too much fuel.

I understand that owner-operators get a two year extension on carb compliance past the fleets.

My first truck was a 379 Pete. What a hassle to drive. Very stable on the road, but when in port, backing was a pain because of it's long wheelbase. The ergonomics in the driver's seat were really poor. I like lots of controls off the steering wheel column, not dash switches are are poorly lit and hard to find...
