Is there a DEF overpressure valve scam?

I noticed there is an overpressure valve on the def pump side of things and the service manager did not want to explain it. Also an inlet screen. It was like I brought out holy water and the cross.

I suspect someone can tweak that forcing the computer to think there is a problem and go into derate mode, so you end up towing to the dealer who says he needs 1700 or more to fix.

I never toyed with it afraid I would break something. I really want to see these systems taken off the road until more affordable, vibration has got to be killing these systems, introducing micro air bubbles into the system etc.

It seems truck makers have ignored drivers and owners that have to pay for this stuff to please regulators.

There is many mechanics books written about these systems. You can learn how all these systems work and the components that manage them and how it all works together. As an owner op id say u are doing a disservice to yourself by not atleast knowing how ur engine and emmissions system operates together. If u atleast understand the concept u can figure out the problem urself it makes it much easier to tell the mechanic what part is failing or what system is failing rather than just getting it towed to the dealer for "emmisions problems" that vague answer is gonna end up getting parts thrown at it and ur bank account is gonna be very angry along with urself as the orginal problem will not be fixed. Like i say its much better to be educated rather than trust the guy who you are paying, to be educated.

I have to replace the inlet screen ($50 kit) every fall. Otherwise the DEF line connector freezes and breaks off going onto the DEF injector on the One-Box first time the DEF freezes overnight in the winter.

    peekaboonotyou and D.Tibbitt Thank this.

Maybe the service guy did not know how the system works. So he could not answer your question. Their is a filter that needs to be changes by the DEF tank. That stop some stuff from going into the system. They have maybe a couple design changes last couple years. Their are other shops like Pittsburgh Power that talk about cleaning the soot out of the engines and doing an emissions tune up basically cleaning they system out every 200,000 miles.

I have see the One Box had upgrade to were it sprays the DEF in the box. Some were getting a big clump of DEF build up inside.

Right. Easier said than done. Apparently you have not even read a book on it by avoiding my question? Yes, I could theorize some jerk in the middle of the night or some mechanic with an under the table arrangement with the local tow service or dealership took a screw driver to something during an oil change.

Or vibration from the trailer slamming the tractor into the pavement several times a second introduces micro pockets of air plugging up the doser making such systems impractical over years.

Or perhaps Congress mandated this stuff and drivers are not going to places like LinkedIn and asking investors what is the damage? Change the laws?

And where are we supposed to educate ourselves as this can require removing fairings, frowned on in many parking areas and time consuming? Some parking areas ban repair work.

Where is this inlet screen, I may be venturing into cold country this winter and I guess mine will need done. It's on a Volvo but all that crap is the same, isn't it?

Yeah I was hoping one of these guys out there would get curious and see if plugging or tweaking that valve would fire off warnings and check engine light.

Should be inside one of the connections on the right side, just feel the hose with the truck running coming off the spin filter assembly, you feel the fluid going faster through it and heated to about 130 deg.

Its a proprietary connection I have never seen (what happened to good old hose clamps). So if I break it I got more problems. Whether there is a scam worth going to the FBI is debatable and if no interest live and let live.
