Until maybe a year ago, I have never heard of long and short stroke maxis. I have replaced literally hundreds of them over the years and just bought 30/30 brake chambers or the 30/30 piggy back units and replaced them. Never has any of my suppliers ask if I wanted long or short stroke.
What are each type typically used for.
I am about to change all the maxis, and slack adjusters on my truck, and the maxis I have on hand are not marked either way. I have not checked to see what is on the truck, but they are not original anyway.
Maxi brake question.

I have looked at the dots specs for oos, and never seen two different specs before?
-
2" for standard stroke Type 30, 2.5" for long stroke.
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I know they are 2 in and 2.5 in, but what different applications are they used for, in other words why 2 different ones? Was one used on trailers, while the other mainly on trucks?
Did some truck manufacturers just decide they need a longer stroke than others?
Why, when you go to any parts house to buy one, do they not ask which one you want? -
CVSA inspectors use any two of the three following identifiers for the L/S to ID them.
1. Service instructions embossed or stamped onto the chamber.
2. Tags showing the rated stroke of the chamber. These tags are trapezoid-shaped (trapezoidal) with information embossed on the surface.
3. Square shaped air ports or a square shaped embossment around the air port.Rideandrepair and spsauerland Thank this. -
In other words either can be used for any application as long as they are all the same. it seems odd that if the long strokes only benefit is more braking power, that they would even make the 2 in stroke one.
Which one did most trucks come from the factory with?Oxbow Thanks this. -
Long stroke seems to be what comes standard if not disc.
