    Hi everyone,

I am hoping to join Roehl's GYCDL program. I already spoke with someone there and basically just need to go do my drug test and DOT physical to get my permit. Like the title says, I am fat with a BMI of 39. I am working on it but I don't think I can get my BMI out of the obese range within 2 months (when I want to start). My neck is more than 17 inches but my blood pressure is much lower than 140/90 so I am positive I will pass that part especially since I am being more aware of what I stuff down my cake hole. I am 6'5 and am told I hold my weight well (but maybe they're just being polite LOL) and have no problems squatting or lifting objects. My wife confirms that I do not snore at night either. I really do not want to do a sleep apnea test. In your honest (no need to be a dick, I have a mirror and 20/20 vision) opinion, will I pass the DOT physical or will I fail and need a sleep apnea test?

    Thanks!!

I am not here to be difficult.

You will meet the definition of Obese until you fall below a certain BMI. You are Sir, on the edge of being seriously extreme Obese.

DOT regulations require you to have feet flat on the floor inside a tractor trailer in the drivers seat. Then you need to be able to put a fist between that steering wheel and your tummy.

Putting the NIH calculator against your height I discover your weight to be about 330. As in Overweight but not Obese. However you are on the line for that.

    BMI Chart

    Table 1
    Body Mass Index Table 1

Table two for those over 35 BMI
    Body Mass Index Table 2

At 77 inches tall you are one line further down than the chart reaches. with that 39 BMI

You will have to understand that some DOT doctors will kick you towards a sleep apena test series and so on. It's been a sort of a scam in my eyes in the last 15 years or so. Probably has alot to do with money in a economy where no one spends a dollar without thinking on it carefully.

Thats all I have to say.

I had a converstation with a DOT Doctor, lost touch with him fairly recently but he indicated ther will be 4 items that will absolutely fail a prospective recruit or those seeking licensing to drive CDA A and B.

All good info thank you. I guess what I am more or less asking is how do they choose whether or not to give you a sleep apnea test? Like I said in my post, my BP is never above 140/90 (I check daily now and it is anywhere from 127/78-132/83). The lower number has been the most recent since watching my weight and going on brisk walks after work so I expect it to drop a bit more over the next month. Is it the BP, BMI, neck circumference, the doctor just eye balling my body or a combination of them all?

First off there are lots of companies that do not do the sleep ap testing, it is not at this time a required test. As far as the physical for your license, call the clinic your going to use ahead and ask, Chiro's are sometimes a little more lax.
I will not go to a company that requires sleep testing. Marten does for instance, SWIFT does not, CRST does not, so you have to check and they will tell you when you call recruiting. Go get your medical and permit , I recommend your license before, the driver mills you still reimburse you for the expense, with out a contract.
Never let anyone tell you, you don't have a choice, sure you do, you just have to exercise it. Do your home work.

Also it depends on the state you live in. My last physical doctor likes the fact I am down 40 pounds and more to go. Yet he said be grateful this was not done in Arkansas. in Arkansas anything 400+ is too much to drive.

There was one company I worked for that threatened to send me for sleep study for a 17.5 neck. I dodged that bullet but also started on losing weight. I'm down to a 16-16.5 now. If you're going to be doing flatbed, you're going to be losing weight (though there are some fat ### [like 400#+] flatbedders).
Depending how much over 17" your neck is, possibly hold off going for a physical/ orientation for 6mos. Riding a bicycle is easier on the joints than walking, lift weights (nothing that makes you strain, but lots of reps) and cut out processed foods. You'll be amazed at how much weight you can lose just by reading labels. Less is always more when it comes to food (fewer and more natural ingredients equal better for you). If you drink diet soda or eat ANYthing with the words lite, light, reduced, low-fat (you get the idea) STOP! it's all going to make you fat because your body doesn't recognize it as food. Yogurt (Greek Gods is the most minimally processed) can be your friend. Clean out those pipes and introduce good bacteria and your digestive system will work better. Dont try any fad diets and dont think salad is going to make you thin. (cows eat nothing but salad) 3 - 4 small meals is better than 2 big ones. A good breakfast can see you through most of the day. No meals within 3hrs of bedtime.

I have seen some fat ### drivers over there..but that's most places. If your 6 5 your a tall person and if your BMI is 39 your probably good. Some places like Prime go by neck size.. I have a friend that went to Roehl and he is a little bit of a short chub and it wasnt an issue for him..Wait until you get out here and see some of these fat slobs ..I dont think you have anything at all to worry about

DOT Doc told me a month ago DOT changed standards and they now consider age and gender so decent chance you might. Also, check yoir blood sugar. If you are diabetic you will be popped for sleep study

You should see the People down here sometimes.

My Krav Instructor is about 300 hisself. From what I had explained to me that if you are carrying the weight and not endangering the heart or being short on "Gas Tank" during a fight, training action or some intense physical activity you are good to go.

Those of us who have problems with the heart or possibly breathing usually fall out to sit somewhere else not in view of the training class. It is good that the doctor will examine them soon enough. Myself included.
