Good point. You use 5/16 or 3/8?
-
I have 6- 20ft chains that have been cut in half.
I also have 1 20ft, and 3 16ft.
I'm using the 16fts more these days.RStewart Thanks this. -
That's what a friend told me today. He cut his 20ft chains on half and has a couple long ones and some 5ft chains for when he hauls wheeled vehicles. I believe that's what I've decided to do as well. No need to be dragging 20ft chains out every time.

All mine are 16’ and I carry 6 4’ shorties. Those shorties have come in handy countless of times.
RStewart Thanks this. -
5/16 or 3/8? Seems most people favor the 3/8.
-
5/16 grade 70 is all I need for my use. My shorties are 3/8.
-
I was thinking of getting 6 25' 3/8 chains... I suppose that's the difference between flatbed and step deck.
-
All 3/8.
They aren't that much heavier than a 5/16 to work with and you get the extra WLL. 3/8 is about 1/4lb heavier per foot compared to 5/16 with a ~30% higher WLL.
I keep 8 x 3/8-1/2 ratchet binders on the truck and 4 x 5/16-3/8 snap binders. Only use the snap binders if I've run out of ratchets or don't have room for a ratchet. I prefer to ratchets because it's a lot less work to adjust them if one starts to loosen up going down the road. Don't have to use a bar.Last edited: Aug 15, 2019
kylefitzy, cke, Diesel Dave and 1 other person Thank this. -
I appreciate all the responses guys. It's cool to see how everyone runs their operation.
One more question, hopefully, lol.
Is there any difference between chain made in the USA vs not? If they are both approved chain, is there a reason to buy the more expensive USA chain other than supporting an American company?
