Well freight out of California has always sucked, so quit whining or quit going to California. Problem solved. You should probably know what the outbound rates are before you going into a state, you should know these things as long as you’ve had your authority, right?

freight out of California has always sucked ? really ? )))))) I don't think so . I live in Los Angeles area. This season $2-2.5 per mile was average rate to Midwest in last 10 years..
-
You realize that capacity is way up this year.
-
yes capacity is waaaaaay up this year and ports are not busy due to trade war with China.
-
Freight waves article just said that load volume is actually a little higher this year then last year. So, there goes the tariff argument. It also said that truck capacity IS leaving the market but at what rate is hard to gauge.

Ive been going midwest to reno and back averaging $1.70 dry van.
Reno can be decent or it can be crappy from one week to the next.
Its a lot of driving. I don't plan on going back there for a while.
One of my contacts had a load going 1800 miles to upper midwest. Says he could pay max $2750. Not quite enough for me so I passed. He claims someone called in and offered to haul it for $2,000. He was shocked. But what are they gonna do? Say no?
Spot market is a crap shoot right now.
Brokers are unsure of how to price their freight because the rates are varying wildly. One broker offered me $2500 on a $3500 lane. "But what would work for you?"
They can't pass up the opportunity to make a killing on the cheap truck but decent volume is still keeping them in check right now. So they're offering low in hopes you're the cheap truck. So I offered her $4000. They probably moved it for $3000. Heavy load.
I think its a good idea to post your truck for more areas than you want to go to, and price high. Even if you don't get it, it still keeps their mind thinking they might have to settle moving it for more than they hoped.
Try to keep.pressure on them. And yes it is the shippers that are really doing the majority of the downward push.
I kinda feel sorry for the brokers who are caught in the middle of it. Except for a couple of the larger ones.Last edited: Aug 16, 2019
