I always folded the excess into about an 8 inch length and cinched the ratchet end down over it, but your way definitely looks better at least.

I see it as lazy not smart. Your talking about frozen straps. But i bet you do that year round. You short strap, crank it down, the spool turns and pulls the tuck out. Now the strap is not tied into the spool. Road vibrations and now you have no positive securment.
Legal or not i find it lacking. The "too much effort" to do it right is no argument.

As far as one way is smarter, well that is plain to see. -
And as a side note, the way i do it causes no issues when frozen. I dont feed 3 inches or a foot, i feed half the slack. When it winds up the tail winds into the spool, and is easy to pull out frozen or not.

I used to do it that way, till I learned better, and it will cause problems when slushed up and frozen solid.
I have literally hooked pickups on and tried to pull them out, only to go get a propane torch, besides that trailers that have the short wenches do not even have room to roll the tail of the rolled up piece in them. I have seen lots of guys do it and think they have the strap tight, only to find out they just bound up the strap against the frame and now have a mess.
We will just have to agree to disagree, but the.way I do it is 100% as safe as the way you do it with a lot less hassle, even with dry straps.Lepton1 and LoneCowboy Thank this. -
