I am thinking about pretty much selling everything I own but my car more or less I should get around 5-6k I don't own much but I do own a bunch of technological stuff like 3 computers and so forth. I have no furniture, pretty much I own a few aquariums a cat some snakes and a bunch of computers. Sell them, buy/lease a truck, move into said truck, run said truck and live out of said truck. Don't need home time, since I won't have a home. I figure it would work pretty good but I am wanting advice before I make the plunge.

Its looking like its just going to be me driving again, so... might as well go all the way and be just me by myself. I've been wanting to o/o since I started trucking, husbands always been holding me back on that regard talked me out of every time, finally guess since its not going to be a long lasting relationship, should do what I want for a change.

My plan is to buy a used pete from someone, probably an 01-03. Haven't found a co yet, but eh, think you need ot have the truck first.

You might want to keep in touch with Coonass and see how things are going with Acme .

Why ? With all the specialized tools needed and the amount of electronic controls on a truck there is very little you can do yourself anyway . Often the extra downtime you spend trying to fix something yourself costs you more than the labor would cost at a shop with proper tools .

    Alright, let me reprhrase that.

i wouldn't buy a truck unless you understand how to fix it.

Obviously, completely remanufacturing an engine/trans is out of the scope of most peoples abilities because the equipment alone is several thousands of $$$ which wouldn't be cost effective to own because engines only need to be rebuilt maybe every 600000 to a million or more miles. So, you would need to farm that out along with lots of other things. But at least you would know that an engine rebuild is coming and could plan for it both financially and logistically/scheduling wise.

But if you understand how to fix a truck, you can understand when and why things need to be worked on. Much, Much more econonmical this way, i think.

For example, keeping an extra alternator with you and being able to change it(you first have to know why you would need to change it) yourself instead of waiting for a service truck to come out to you will save boatloads of time and money.

    2) The other reasons is that most shops suck these days----they can barely fix a sandwich much less a truck.
So, this is another reason you must know as much as possible about the workings of a truck.

With only 5 to 6 grand to your name...I think you're crazy to even be thinking about being an O/O. It could end up being financial suicide. I doubt you'll be getting much encouragement here.

I say go for it if that will make you happy and you don't think you'll regret it in the future. You only live once. Used trucks are cheap and you won't have any additional living expenses to worry about (mortgage, rent, car payments, etc...). I'm kind of in the same boat right now and determined to get on with Landstar pulling a step come winter, after I get my year in here. Good luck to you in your endeavors.

Not to be a jerk but considering what you have said about your financial circumstances and yet your plan is to buy a PETE.....Nothing wrong with Petes but your thought should be "Buy a good solid used truck from someone reguardless of what brand". If you have to drive a COE for a year to get your ducks in a row, who cares!!! At this point you can't afford to be "COOL". Be productive! Best of Luck

While not related to your question, this is directly related to your future.

Especially if you intend to purchase a new home somewhere in the future, after becoming an O/O...and sellling everything you have.

The new Cap & Trade contains language that would force you to meet CA building standards on all new homes and renovations of older homes. Regardless of where you live.

You may be living in that truck longer than you originally planned.

    shutupa u face! lol

somtimes looking cool is totally worth it.

I disagree with needing a truck first though. You first need to know you have a solid place to work a truck then go find a truck.

may even consider buying one of the old werner 379's with the 70" bunk
