You would log it on Line 1 and flag it as "Off Duty/Driving"...

That's according to a CHP/FMCSA officer who did my BIT

Not what the DOT says as they put you out of service.

You do know the vehicle is a 1 ton dodge?

Doesn't't matter whether it's a 1 ton or a class 8 tractor according to what I have been told....
1 ton and above are subject to DOT #'s and MC #'s if operated interstate...
When I was a foreman in construction, all of my 1 tons had CA #'s on them...and technically if we had an out of town job....we had to log it if we pulled compressors or other equipment behind them....

Most contractors don't know sheeyat about DOT/state HOS regs......

I know of several contractors that send crews to Palm Springs ...their crews leave their yards at 3 am to get to the job by 6 and work 10 hours and the guys head back home getting to their yards by 8 pm......

Nobody pays per diem in the Utility biz...so either they go home and take turns driving or sleeping...or pay for their own lodging out of pocket...

Those same contractors bid work say in Sacramento and send crews up from the L.A./Orange county areas....If DOT did some checking....there would be a lot of OOS.....

    I have the numbers.

You said line 1 off duty/driving.

I was wondering if you meant line 4.

We are subject to the 11 hour rule of driving as a class 8.

My point is that if people think that a Class 8 can be driven for any distance, then they have much to learn.

If you log it on line 4, that would be "On Duty"....

The Line 1 "Off Duty/Driving" can be used to go from your yard to home...or say you are on a reset at motel and go bobtail to Wallyworld to go for groceries.....

To expect drivers to buy the crap from truck stops is unrealistic......I have never had a problem dropping the trailer at the motel and driving the two or three miles to go for groceries....

My scenario for the example of someone running whatever miles they wanted was from Montana to say Iowa. I was referring to that.

Local running around a truck stop without the trailer, no problem.

It really depends on the company you work with. The otr company I drove with, wanted all miles driven to be accounted for in your log book. They checked each and every log when you sent it in. Any change in location without marking it as so in your logbook would be cause for being disciplined by the company.

If I remember correctly the regs say a reasonable distance. Guess that means its up to the local DOT officer. I log going to and from home just to be safe since I have to pass the Banning scales everytime I go the yard and I'm usually under dispatch when I leave home. Yes I bobtail to and from home, but I live about 90 miles from the yard.

I'm on a dedicated route and I unload in Chicago. My home is North of Duluth MN, which is around 12 1/2 hour drive. So this becomes a problem for me, what I was hoping for, was to drive for 5-6 hrs, than crash for 8 hrs and hit the road again to get home.

Usually I finish my drop off at my 10-11 hour of drive, now I would have to do 10 hrs off, then drive 11 hrs, then 10 more off, then 1 1/2 hr to finish, now thats a burden. And sort of the same thing coming back. I haven't been home for over 6 months now, because of this problem of my home being so far away. They (company) won't give me any loads to that direction, because I'm dedicated and run twice as many miles as compared to most other drivers in this company.... This sucks.....
