I'd be interested in what load#'s the service failures were on.
Please note that when going from a team to a single the pay does go down, they pay a premium for teams. And all single miles are down. Truckloads largest customer is 95% team required, so it stands to reason that teams will run better than singles.
Truckload is very strict, and for good reason. The only thing that separates Con-way Truckload from the compition in customers eyes is service. Frankly one minute late is the same as 10 minutes or a hour late. Late is late. and if you don't send the forms in on time to show you arrived , well your late. Sitting at the same exit is not the same as being on the custmers property. If your going to be late and have a reason for it, delayed in traffic, weather, whatever, as long as it is communicated there typically is not a problem. Idleing is a line that any company takes,Truckload does not have much of a idleing policy, but they do have a fuel mileage goal, that is most certainly obtainable.

It's been a couple years since I left the former CFI. But, I'm reasonably sure their GPS and late calls work the same.
Running late is handled by the system, not the DM. A quick trip up to the war room will provide you a glimpse of the "red highlighted" entries, tracked through software and GPS positioning.
As the other poster stated, it's often off by as much as 50 miles.
Sending an arrival call early, can get an immediate reaction from the software also, and alert the DM. Simple movements, such as those used while entering a customers property, and driving around the lot at reduced speeds, do not draw attention.
Prolonged and sustained movement, and speeds in excess of preset perimeters (indicators of false arrival message) will automatically send a notice to the system/DM.
When you have the time. Go up to the war room, if they still allow it. At simply watch the screens as they scroll through their views. You can learn a lot. -
Mustang must be a Con-Way employee.... One, he/she is from Joplin where the main terminal is, two they are asking for load numbers why would anybody but someone from Con-Way care about load numbers, and three he/she talks like a recruiter...
I would never give the load numbers because all that could do would cause trouble for my bf...I'm not stupid...Last edited: Jun 27, 2009

Yes, you are almost correct. Says right in my profile, work for Truckload, also shows what my job is, and is not a recruiter. But I do talk like somebody that is knowledgeable in the company I work for.
I was just simply curious to see all the info.
Everybody has a side to the story. Seems that most threads of the this nature, always have the best drivers in the world, and it is always the company out to get em.
Rarely do I see where somebody starts a thread that says I was late arriving to a customer, and my company wrote me up, but thats ok, it was my fault.
I also know that there some companies that tend to be that way. I know for a fact that Con-way Truckload is not that way. The have high standards in service levels, and expect alot from all their employees, including drivers.
The folks that have the authority give all, again drivers and office employees, plenty of chances to achieve performance levels, and if they can't after much coaching, well yes sometimes let go. And so be it.
In this market, the only thing that separates any general trucking company is just that "service".
Yes it is true, when documenting service failures IE arriving late to a customer, it is the truck that the service failure tends to go against. Unfortunately nobody knows who is driving. So if it is team truck, well the team gets the write up. Fleet Managers review all service failures, there are also 5 people that is all they do is review service failures. But they are fleet managers, not detectives. Most Fleet Managers have 70-80 trucks to watch every day. There are systems in place that are automated in regard to truck locations, and late messages sent. They are not meant to "hassle" the driver, they are in place to identify late trucks and provide information to the customer. All goes back to service.
As far as pay goes, Truckload pays a premium to the teams and provides a premium service. So when a driver goes from a team to a single, they no longer get, not should they get that premium pay.
This all goes back to service.
And before you go back to saying I am a recruiter, or a spokesman or anything of that nature, I am not. I don't speak for the company, only for myself. Although I guess at one point I sort of was a spokesman, when I was OTR, I was in some of the trade magazines, but was a driver, not a recruiter. Now I put trucks on loads and loads on trucks, simple as that.
Thats all I got to say about that......truckerwannab, Sacred Feline and Poobah Thank this. -
Years ago, the locations could and would be way off. That was when our communications were cellular based. Since going to all Quallcomm, although not 100% perfect, still get some stray ones. It is fairly accurate to location. Cool technology's, Can tie the Lats and Longs from Quallcomm to Google maps, streets and trips, etc, and get a fairly accurate view where the truck is. Can take same lat and longs and grab instant weather conditions where truck is at. This not only helps to see where trucks are for on time service stuff, also has saved a life knowing exactly where a driver is in a emergency, really helpful when you tie it into google maps, then grab a birdseye view. Still even with all the tech, not a big fan of all the big brother stuff.

So obviously Con Way hires student grads then? How long is the orientation & how long are you with a trainer? Whats the pay like during this time & is it possible to get regional? I live in the midwest, quincy Il. is this a good place to live for Con Way? Good home time? I'm very interested in working for them. Any info would be a great help guys.

KDD, your best bet is to call em, Can not qoute me on this, but it is my understanding that they are not conducting orientations at this given moment. Rumor on the street is starting limited oriertations mid July maybe, again can not quote me. With that I am not so sure they have suspended the student deal for the time being. All of this is due to the economy. Truckload still turns a profit while others do not. They have a abundance of drivers (new hires) waiting for trucks.
This isn't the first time they have scaled back in the student deal, and I would guess as things pick up, and they to be already, with due time they will bring it back again. But like I said, it is just best to call em, that way you get all the facts, and not a mess of hearsay (is that spelled right?). -
How long you been with Con-Way? And thanks your right I will just call & talk to them myself, hear from the horses mouth so there is no confusion. Thanks for your help mustang.
