Do you want to get 8mpg making $2 a mile or so you want to get 3mpg making $8 a mile?

Both can be done I like door number to Bob. But this only happen with local loads. That is my conundrum.

I wonder what effect this trend towards down speeding has on engine longevity. You hear more of trucks needing rebuilds with under 600,000 miles on them, some under 300,000 miles.
I do hear of recent engines going over a million, but I wonder if they have traditional gearing?
    IDK, just thinking out loud.

  6. probably with an impending recession on the forefront just like about a little over 10 years ago people are getting ready for higher fuel prices did happen again may happen again..
and the fact that they're bringing up more and more about the speed limiter mandate and it's garnering more and more interest to therefore you may end up finding the new name of the game is going to be conserving fuel and gearing properly..
because just like ELogs became a sad reality and so did CSA 2010 there's a possibility the speed limiter is too is Canada's now had in Ontario and Quebec for 10 years.
and you look at all these insane crashes with all these morons more than ever before in the year 2019 then there's been in 10 years so what are you get more Garnering interest to slow the trucks down doesn't matter. we know speed limit variances are not safe but I'm afraid we're losing the battle as old school professionals because we become a minority we are no longer the majority it's now about quantity not quality...

so folks your great big motors in your big 18 speeds can almost be kind of sadly obsolete but in practicality if you're stuck at having to be at 65 mile per hour God forbid even lower like 62 with a speed limiter; it's better to spec out your truck to meet the gear ratios for the engine and the speed right now because Elog was the game-changer it's almost two years old now it's stuck everybody thought it was going to go away it didn't go away did it?? nope

So you are saying to gear a truck accordingly to what may happen somewhere down the road?? I will just wait and see what happens. lol
I had one of them trucks geared for the 55 speed limit at one time, I made a dumptruck out of it, so 56 wasn't too bad. lol
My log truck runs out of steam at 65, and I sure wouldn't want to use it for a road truck.
When I bught my international they had it limited at 65, I test drove it and when it just quit accelerating at 65, I turned around and took it back. The dealer told me they could fix that, I told them fix it then we will test drive it. lol

How else are you going to talk an OP into taking perfectly good gears, swapping them out with the ones you bought cheap, then selling the popular set for even more profit. The idea, is to run existing 13 dbl over, 2 gears from top, in direct drive. Then run a 120 mph Truck @ 60 mph. Saving .0000000005% in fuel!!!! You’ll be rich in no time!!!!

A direct drive doesn’t have as much parasitic energy loss in the transmission. That’s why people originally started doing it. Then came the drive your 18 speed in 16th with 2.64 crowd. Now that Detroit and Paccar are offering proprietary transmissions and rear ends they’re setting them up to run at peak torque with their engines.

That said, I have an 18 speed and 3.36 rears and I’m right at 1300 rpm at 63 all day long.

I am sure there is some small differences, but just looking at the speedo and tach, these three comes out very close to the same in the big hole.

It’s also simple to change to run at the speed and rpm you want regardless of rear end ratio.
    It’s called shifting gears.
People think that a low rear end ratio won’t pull good either.
    Just shift.
