I'm looking at a couple different Western Stars. Will be hauling flatbed max 80k up and down the west coast and over the Cascades and Sierras some. Just curious some of your opinions. Both are DD15/DT12.
Truck 1:
$62K
2016 5700XE
2.53 gear ratio direct transmission
Mid Roof
505k miles and overall 47MPH average speed
Tri Pac APU in unkown(at this point still) condition
No warranty but option to purchase factory warranty for 1 year at 8k or 2 years at 11.7k.
Truck 2:
$75K
2016 5700XE
2.41 gear ratio direct transmission
Raised Roof
292k miles and overall 38MPH average speed
No APU
Warranty status still unkown, will find out tomorrow what it is for sure, but apparently possible it still has a year of its original warranty.
If Truck 2 does have a year left on its warranty it would bring the prices between the 2 trucks fairly close for having a 1 year warranty on both and still have 200k less miles. Truck 1 is an overall better setup though despite the higher miles with the mid roof, APU, and the gear ratio.

Wonderful! At least it's not the dreaded "V" word. I guess I'd go with the lower miles truck. I'm not sure what the "overall mph" thing is about, but less miles is always a good thing. And what transmissions?, sounds like 10 speeds. Detroit's will run for a million miles. My 1st truck was a '82 Star. I put Pete air ride on the back, 350 BC, 10 speed, it was a darn nice truck. Made money with it because it rarely failed.

Overall mph is mileage divided by engine hours. Basically, how much has this thing probably been idled.
Mentioned at the top both trucks are dd15 with DT12 transmissions.201 Thanks this. -
Maybe offer $67,000 for the 2nd truck. Remember prices are down because trucks aren’t selling. Take advantage of that.
Rideandrepair and snowwy Thank this. -
I have ben scouring adds, just for the fun of it, (I am not in the market) but all over the country, I am not seeing where the price of trucks are down.

Well, I haven't noticed prices going down, but I have noticed that trucks aren't disappearing off sale ads.OldeSkool Thanks this.

Now that point I can't argue at all as I just do it fom time to time for the fun of it. I have always noticed in the past that prices start dropping pretty quick when the market is in a slump, especially private sales.
