One of the dumbest things I ever heard a CDL holder say about why he wasn't running his headlights in the day time - it was because he didn't want to wear them out.

That’s pretty stupid. My other favorite is “I don’t need my headlights on, I can still see just fine!”

I almost got hit last week by a silver car in a monsoon with no lights on. I pulled right the #### out in front of him... Honestly looked real good and didn't see him.

Someone please enlighten me because I've been laughed at in person over this, I don't feel like it's the most ridiculous thing to believe that keeping your lights on all the time would burn them out at least a bit quicker than if you didn't, why is this such a silly thing to think?? Tell me so that I keep from making myself look like an idiot out here because you guys clearly have the same sentiment as the other jokesters

    D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

It's actually more on/off cycles that kills them. The heating and cooling of the glass loosen up the socket to glass seal and starts to deteriorate the vacuum needed to keep the filiment from burning out. So always off or always on is the best for long life.

I generally turn them on whenever there's rain, snow, dust or I'm on a two lane highway. Once I turn them on I just don't care about turning them off until I stop.

I run my amber lights ALL THE TIME... Partly to make me slightly more visable, but mostly because I can read the dash cluster better with the night time illumination theme, even in the daylight.
