I'm currently at an outfit like that. You really need to reconsider this...
And you seriously need to double the money you asked for.
Think about it...clueless owners. Means you'll be driving, and be the office manager, shop foreman, DOT consultant, and everything else.
But hey, you'll deal with everything an OO does, with none of the upsides. Truck breaks down...your fault. Paperwork out of order that leads to fines & OOS...your fault. Failed inspection...your fault. Doesn't matter that you've brought every issue to the owner's attention.
Go take a vacation. Seriously. Do something fun for a while. Even take off work for a few months to go travel. You sound bored. Don't screw up a good thing because of that.ChevyCam, EuropeanTrucker, FlaSwampRat and 2 others Thank this. -
Yep, just walked away from a very similar situation. Would love to find a nice boring cryo gig.FlaSwampRat and Dennixx Thank this.

With only 4 years left until retirement? Umm plus one.
Bumpa dee da,
Bumpa dee da,
happy trails....to youFlaSwampRat and Dennixx Thank this. -
You sound like a man who knows of what he speaks and I have no doubt your financial house is in order. Assuming that, I say go for it. Not many things in life are worse than boredom and the feeling of regret.
On the other hand, you just may have had the opportunity to see that what you've currently got isn't so bad after all.
How's that for being definitive? -
Truth told after retirement we will be moving to a more tax friendly state, most likely s.d...but wy and ky are in the mix and we are nearing the one mil mark in retirement funds so we'll probably be ok. Maybe after retirement I'll try something stupid..lol

Obviously you found out they have no clue. They bought a pos truck because they probably thought they "got a great deal". I went through this with a guy who had a construction co. Bought trucks and started a trucking company in one of the best markets we've seen, had a good flatbed and an rgn and still went out of business because they had no idea wtf they were doing.
With 4yrs left, Id say its probably not the best move for you. For a guy in his 30's like me, I could see going in and helping them if they were open to having someone that is more than just a driver. But in my experience, people who own a business hate being told how to do anything.
