Too heavy, I know of a couple of 453's in pickups that did pretty well. I knew an old blacksmith in Az, that had a 453 in a 65 ford F250 with w 4spd and a 4 spd overdrive brownie behind it. This was before they cheapened up the diesel, but he could cruise 80 on the interstate and get 20 mpg doing it.
I have a 56 (I think) single axle pug nosed jimmy with a 471 in it that is factory original. It is a NM rig so still clean and rust free. That engine not only runs the truck, but I have a rotary drill rig on it that is powered off the pto, air comp and all.

I don't know of any old saying.
However on the upgrade if she tried to buck because I stayed in gear too long before downshifting the trainer will smile and say wait a moment .. wait for it..
Coung cough cough cough at 750 RPM still moving. The minutes she started shaking and spitting the trainer says now lets see you do this at 700.
WOT!?
I don't meet too many crazies out there. But I think thats abuse. She did it that time but can only imagine Thor or someone busting down the piston, rods and so on. -
Them old jimmys would melt right down if you lugged them, bust to keep them wound tight.
In fact he longest lasting 318 I was ever around was in a rago pulvimixer with a hydrostat tranny. You cranked that obnoxiousy loud puppy set the rpms at 2200 and it stayed thee all day.bzinger, Rideandrepair, okiedokie and 2 others Thank this. -

I am thinking wrong, the 6V53 may not be too heavy, iirc it is the same block that the old monster (heavy) V6 gas engine that gmc put in some pickups in the 60's.
I have never seen jakes on a 53 series though, I have driven 8V71's with jakes though.bzinger, AModelCat, Rideandrepair and 2 others Thank this. -
Want me to let you in on a little secret about 53 series Jakes....??AModelCat, FlaSwampRat and x1Heavy Thank this. -
