I believe the correct term is "alligator radio" Since it's all mouth and no ears

80% loss in one and about 70 loss in the other. Which means I need about 80 db or stronger noise source which is pretty much a V8 Revving or a Jet engine of sufficent size and power output. With enough DB (Volume) I can hear things perfectly, only up to around 5000 hertz at most which is about half in pitch what humans hear anyhow. In practical terms birds chirping I can follow some.

The hearingaids I get issued provide a minimum of 50 db boost over surrounding area into the ear. It does automatically quit in milliseconds at about 140 db which is provided by Civil War Live Fire Artillery in NSSA at Winchester VA once a year. 12 in battery is quite plenty to make ears bleed but for me with the earplugs protected by computer its a simple flat "THUMP" more across the body than hearing. Napoleons in Brass rings like bell on top of that thump so... its interesting sometimes. Rifled Parrots in the 10 pound class just shoots a big hole in your head audio wise to let in more understanding of sound. (Sarc)

Or if I have to late at night when awake I can hear the wife get into the cookie Jar across the house. A glass lid tinking against a glass body along with the rattle of chocolate chip cookies differentiating between just baked fresh cookies and those that are drying out a week later.

Been wearing aids I would say almost 50 years now, since the 60's across several generations of evolution in technoloy and also the shaking out of the hearing aid industry. Maryland Hearing Aid Service is one of the survivors of that era outside of Johns Hopkins and The State School which has a complete audiology dept that is world class. (It has to be.) Go into a sound room, close the door and sit. Eventually you understand that the db level is below zero and if you stay in there too long the noises from your own body processes become a problem. Your mind filters that out normally but in a situation environment quiet enough or beyond quiet in this case, you get to really enjoy the best in Audio speakers in the corner driven by the best Mankind can build. Run some beethoven through them for a few minutes and it does not have any differences than actually being at a lyric house in person. Except the record being used has grooves in it you have the clarity and power behind it to understand that you are getting from the grooves. Digital power when clean enough is a form of pleasure enjoyed by men and women at times in life for the material source.

I am not a audiophile. But I can tell you if a headset is good or junk, just need to drive it with the sound card on my computer to see. I occasinolly have a third party sound card installed into the motherboard and complete in digitial and optical sound connections driven by it's own power. For me thats all thats needed once you get the software up and running to control it.

Deaf? HA.... Thats not a problem.

The CB radio gets a external speaker or headset off it's 3.5 mm jack. Sometimes the external has its own power and a line filter to cut the HUMMMMMMM out of it. Or worse in a big rig with a crappy alternator you get zpzpzpzpzpzp makes you wanna shoot it. And my personal favorite the Telcoil in the hearing aids picks up anything that radiates power. For example Mall shop entry scanners for security. zzzzzzzzzzzzz waiting for the rogue inventory chip to walk through the field out of the store attached to something you did not pay for. CHIRP! SNAP and then the alarm.

Good strong alternators have a constant pleasant whir to them if you raise the RPMs enough you can even assess the points on the V8 1970 351 engine bzbzbzbzbzbzbz sorta. If the pattern has interruptions you will match it to the coughs int he engine as it misfires. Don't need a mechanic and his wall sized sun diagnostics to trace the source to the offending wire or plug or coil etc.

As a deaf person I either require some time in the sound proof corner test room or a very large swimming pool and below the water as the air holds out. That isolates the world and all the noise from it both electrically and audio. Or get far enough to sea or into the mountain range away from cities and towns etc.

Deaf? HA, there is a whole world to discover within a world among those who are not.

Cobra and Galaxy radios have terrible stock microphones. It's an art form to hold them in the right position to sound good. hold them a bit too close and you will sound like a quacking duck. IMO, It's almost mandatory to buy another mic $30-$50 just to sound decent.

I would by a Uniden or President radio and then buy a bluetooth headset instead of buying a mic for the cobra. A lot easier to use and it will be hands free.

You don't need to key the mic on a BT Cobra while using it for a phone call. :)

Galaxy 44 with a RK56 mic. Been running the same radio for 20+ years. Just a cheap Firestick antenna.
