I started my own authority recently. I am a brand new venture out of Florida and before that I was going to lease onto a company.
The authority`s age has nothing to do with better rates. It has everything to do with if brokers would even give you the load. Most of the good loads I want to get get denied and i get told to wait for at least 90 days.
I lucked out and got myself a dispatcher worth his weight in gold. He has been doing this for about 10 years and keeps me loaded even with my new numbers. He vouches for me with brokers he knows for years that would never give a load to new numbers.
If you lease onto a company while aging your numbers you will be paying double insurance or paying your own insurance after forking over a part of your earnings to the company you are leased to. You will also be pretty much running on their terms, forced to take loads you dont want or going places you don't want to go.
I'm paying a premium so I can work when I want, where I want and how I want.
I'm less than 2 and a half weeks in and I am very happy so far! Paid all my monthly expenses within the first weeks work.
Good luck with whatever you decideBig Texas Transport Thanks this. -
Thank you 24k for all of the info. We were going to lease to a company for 10% of whatever we made but after having a woman who is with a commercial insurance company tell me that everyone she has done a policy for that has leased on under someone else's authority has regretted it a few months down the road. She also told me that by then they had already paid the down payment for the insurance and would lose all of that money.
We've decided to just get our own authority. I figure it's going to be hard either now or later if we decided to wait. So why wait?
We got the DOT and MC numbers yesterday. Now we're shopping around for insurance.... One step at a time... But it's all coming together!!BlinkBlink and 24kHotshot Thank this. -
I pay my dispatcher 7%, but he deals with customers, brokers and will chase them for payments if needed. I can call him 24/7 and can ask him to look up directions, truck stops, repairs or to keep an eye out for weather. He hounds the brokers for more pay every single job we take. He really does it all. I couldn't be happier to have found him. A good dispatcher is all the difference between success and failure.Todd_Walker, Big Texas Transport, BlinkBlink and 1 other person Thank this.

How did you find him?

Pure luck and chance.
My uncle drove an uber before he went into hotshotting as well and happened to pick him up at an airport and he told my uncle that he is a dispatcher for car haulers. My uncle told him I was getting into the business and he got his number. I interviewed him over the phone about his service and was happy with what I was told. He even sent me a few monthly gross invoices of his other drivers to prove his claims and also spoke to a couple of his drivers as well. They had only good things to say about him. His father drove a stinger for a decade and thats where he got his experience dispatching. Very nice and knowledgeable guy. -
Wow that was luck! I have 3 nieces who are dispatchers at 3 different trucking companies I can get some tips from them if we decide to do the dispatching ourselves. Right now we're concentrating on getting our authority. I really appreciate you taking the time to talk to me and answer my questions!

Hey, I run a big rig, a one truck Company and my full Authority insurance was $4,360 down and it's $2,040 per month for 8 or 9 months....
Like the other driver said it would not make sense or do you any good to do that!!!
You just have to accept the crooked game of Insurance!!!
No way around it, but if you get it YOU'RE FREE TO DO YOUR OWN THING, SUCCESS AND PROSPERITY IS YOUR'S!!!!
YOU'RE THE MAN, WELL IN THIS CASE YOU'RE THE WOMAN/ THE BOSS!!!
THE WAY IT'S MEANT TO BE REALLY, THAT'S HOW IT'S REALLY DESIGNED!!!
It's hard, but you're just going through the route, that , if you we're fortunate enough, that your daddy and/ or momma taught you, you're supposed to be and do!!!
Only work as an employee/ contractor for these sorry MF's long enough to get the money to do your own thing!!!
***That's for everyone who reads this!!!
IT'S ALL WORTH IT IF YOU CAN DO IT THEN GO FOR IT, IGNORE FEAR IN THAT REGARD, BUT DANGER IS REAL, PAY ATTENTION TO THAT #### THOUGH!!!
YOU'LL THANK ME IN THE END!!!
PEACE OF MIND, POWER AND PROSPERITY BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!!!ChristianOutlaw, procharged392, nj.duxbury and 1 other person Thank this. -
Thank you! Yeah I am working on getting my own authority after hearing what everyone said I feel like that will be the best way to go. Although I grew up in trucking and my husband has 20 plus years of experience, I'm new to this aspect of it so any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated!!

What’s your status!?
I waited so long for insurance quotes l, finally finalizing it today at $14,280 after adding full coverage and general liability.
Gonna start off renting a trailer until I can get a loan.
How are you gonna go about finding loads? I’m looking into different dispatchers and had one shipper in Houston tell me to call them back after my MC is active. Hopefully, there’s some good intrastate loads till then.
Also, hoping most of my first loads have quick pay option because I’m not factoring. Every call starts off with me saying I don’t want factoring and they rep going on for 10 minutes of ignoring that I don’t want it. Feel like I’m talking to a free vacation scam artist .
Have you gotten your IRP and IFTA set up already? I’ll get those next week.
