Here's the story I was a 5 axis cnc programmer made good money got laid of from my job of 19 years got a severance package and decided I don't want to work for anyone anymore so I bought a 1984 359 day cab twin rear axle my buddy who has been a driver for years showed me how to drive it and help me get me permit and I’m going to make an appointment to get the real CDL (trying to make a long story short). What is the best way to get local runs and so I can get home every night. This web site has been really useful to me I’ve been able to learn about insurance etc. I made the decision to do this so please help me if you can thanks.by the way i love that truck it's bada$$

My very first job out of training was hauling shipping containers around the ports of Seattle. If you're anywhere near L.A., you could do the same I'm sure. Just find some O/O with a few trucks and start grabbing some cans.

It's boring driving and you got traffic of course, long lines sometimes just to get loaded, but it was decent pay and your home every night. I didn't mind it too much.

You also might find an O/O with a dedicated run say 100 miles out and then back. Those can get boring too, but at least you can get out of low range on the highway as opposed to idling around the ports all day. heh.

I just browse sites like Craigslist and the want ad's. Call the guys offering local jobs, tell them your experience level and see if they have a gig for you.

I'd also consider just parking your truck for a bit and drive company. Beat up someone elses truck and get super smooth on the transmission. Then you can worry about beating up your own truck. :)

    .
I'm going to get hammered for this.....But I gotta do it.

Why would you go out an buy a truck so old that it will be banned, before you can earn the money back????

Or has it been retro fitted???

Go over into the Owner Op portion of this forum, and start asking questions. You may even want to google a few things about EPA changes in CA regarding the future of commercial vehicles.

Second question... Is somebody in CA running late night infommercials called "How to get rich driving a truck."

Forget L.A. and Long Beach or any other port there. His truck would not be allowed through the gate unless he had all the new mods done on the emissions.

While you may think that might slight me. I find it rather funny.

Since someone from Mississippi appears to be more informed about the nature of Commercial trucking, in your state.

Guess what? You're going to be out of work again, real soon.

Check your state regulations regarding emmisions and commercial trucking.

My state has no such restrictions....yet.

I find no incorrect information in danc's post. The CARB rules will soon have your truck parked, and it may not be able to enter the ports now.

There are so many people from Ca. buying, or wanting to buy trucks, it makes you wonder if there is an infomercial on "getting rich being an owner-operator" running on TV.

You asked for help. His was the most relivant, whether you like his wording or not.
