I am looking to buy a truck and had one in mind. It's a 2004, and has a Mercedes Benz MBE 4000 engine with 435 horsepower. About 400,000 miles on the truck already.

I have never worked with a Mercedez Benz engine, can someone let me know if they think it's a good one? Or recommend another?

    Thanks

At 400K it should be on its second head gasket, fuel injector lines, one or more water pumps, and if it is an EGR engine, the manifold at the slip joints may have been changed a couple times.

Some of the pre-EGR engines had poor designed bell housings that would let the bolts back out, causing the engine would drop down on one side and almost fall out on the ground.

Other than that, the engines get good fuel mileage.

Our company has had great luck with Cummins engines. Both the N14 and the ISX. You'll have your share of EGR valve/cooler issues on the ISX 02. The ISX 07 moved the EGR valve to the cold side so it hasn't been an issue thus far but the coolers are still failing.

We run 15 ISX 02's and 3 ISX 07's (all 525 HP) and have a fleet MPG of 6.8.
