No power at the TA in Redding due to PG&E shutting off the power because of the possibility of high winds blowing down electrical lines and starting a fire. So, you can't get fuel here.

This is what they make big generators for. Could they just not get one because the entire north of california was going out?Dave_in_AZ Thanks this.

Wonderbar.
Three million in CA if not a little more are expected to be unplugged tonight Midnight CA Time.
This will continue for about a week as they work really hard to avoid burning the state.
Reminds me of the old 2000 time period where CA was not able to import sufficient electric power and we had to treat many dark intersections as stop signs during that time period. Fueling was out of the question so several incidents of epic running on a pair of tanks were recorded.JC1971 and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
Poles that are outside 24/7 cant withstand wind awesome idea.
FlaSwampRat, x1Heavy and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
Actually is the trees etc that fall on them which then makes them fail once certain forces are met.
A much easier to undersand engineering of Electric poles is a ice storm.
Most poles and wires with bolts etc are generally able to accept ice of about half inch thick max. Meaning if you had say 2 poles 400 feet apart and somehow during a icing event storm accumulates half a inch, it now weighs several hundred pounds heavier in addition to the insulation, bolts, wires and so forth.
Should the ice storm continue to pile on more of that ice towards 3/4 inch thickness the system will break. Not if but when it reaches a certain situation beyond the 1/2 inch capacity for ice.
Now if you carried this further to high voltage long haul transmission towars and their one foot thick 6 inch stranded internal cables...

Maybe a good time to invest in companies that want to build small nuclear power plants that would provide power to individual cities. It would eliminate the problem of long-distance, high-voltage transmission lines.
FlaSwampRat, x1Heavy, Dave_in_AZ and 1 other person Thank this. -
hopefully with people like Taylor Wilson.
JC1971 Thanks this. -
Chernobyl has a nuclear power plant right next to it it has benefited greatly from it no forest fires at all.FlaSwampRat Thanks this.
