Went looking at trucks this past Friday and found 2 that interested me.
The first is a 06 int. 9400I, cat c-15 435hp, 315k miles, autoshift, 6 alum. wheels with about 50% tread on all tires and 40% on the brakes. It has the remainder of the 5year/500k mile warranty(the in service date is 11/22/05). The interest rate should be between 10-12%.
The second is a 05 freightliner columbia, detroit 14L 490 hp, 400k miles, eaton 10 speed, all aluminum wheels, virgin tires all the way around with michelins on the rear (80% tread) and bridgestones on the front (90% tread), and an auxiliary generator, they also replaced the air compressor and front brakes when they had it serviced. I was told the interest rate would be between 6-8%.
The dealer with the int. has about 10 to choose from...is this unusual for trucks to be turned in with so much warranty left on them?
Should i have an oil analysis done on one or both?
With no warranty left on the freightliner would a dyno be advised with only 400k on the engine? Any ideas on the cost?
I've been reading your forums for the last month or so to learn as much as i can so i welcome all answers, questions, comments, red flags etc. i've been a company driver for the last 13 years (local) but considering o/o when things start picking up.

I agree with 112racing. Stay away from the CAT and auto. The CAT won't get decent mpgs' until you spend some money and time tuning it and don't even get me started on the auto tranny deal.

I would definetly put any truck you are going to buy on a dyno. This is as close as you can get to working a truck without working it...did that just make sense? Oil samples are also a must. I would first do a dyno pull or take the truck for a spin and then let them sample it. I have found a couple dealerships trying to hide a bad rearend by not letting samples be taken. Heck one shop didn't even want me to see the sample taken from the truck (can you say "GIANT RED FLAG").

The left over warranty is no mig deal now-a-days. Fleets are turning over trucks faster for many reasons. The biggest is just plain downsizing or repos. I would just take any truck you are interested in to a independent shop that you trust and pay them the extra money to go inspect it completely. Not just a DOT inspection, but a very close look at everything.

You usually won't find a class 8 truck dyno by googleing it. I would call the place your buying from up there or maybe even some of the other truck shops. If it helps, Freightliner of Toledo has a dyno and Cummins in Perrysburg, OH did also (it broke and they really don't want to fix it).

CATs can't get MPGs is a myth.

How ever they are more reliable than the driptroit.

Also you probably won't be happy with the autoshift.
Friend of mine bought one because it was "cheap". Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
Cheap up until he had to have it worked on. Then he was wishing
    for a regular 10 spd.

Dynos can be found by calling the truck stealerships and CAT stealerships. The closest dyno to me is the CAT store only a few miles away and is about $50 cheaper than the KW stealership.

Detroit, Cummins and Cats, You never know how long one is going to last, each engine is a little different. I have seen guys need to overhaul them because something went wrong with less then 200,000 miles. I got a bad E- model Cat back in 97' and had to overhaul it with less then 100,000 miles. A fellow O/O bought a new FLD in 93' with a Detroit and had over a 1,100,000 when he sold it and it was still going strong and never had to do anything to it. You just never know.

And then I've seen driptroits with a hole the size of my head in the side of the block.

I agree that some just lay down on the yob.

    A pinhead size hole?

I couldn't resist. most CAT lovers don't understand than Cat's were built for marine applications, they make great boat anchors.

    490 Hp to 435
    10 speed to a slushbox
    miles are nearly identical

That choice is a no-brainer. Word of warning. As far as service goes, Freightliner dealerships are the absolute worst.
