Got my first hazmat load going to Texas from south jersey. Any recommendations on ways to get around the tunnel through Baltimore. I’m planning on making may way to 81

I-95 south to Baltimore,I-695 North or West around the north side of Baltimore, back to I-95 South,to I 495 West,at DC to I-66 West to I-81 South. Good route, just a lot of traffic.

Yeh man that’s what I was looking at just worried about all that Baltimore and DC traffic. Was wondering if back tracking up 295 to 76 west to 81 south would be faster. Or is that just too far out of the way

    695 around.

Tunnels are verboten totally. DO NOT try to go through them at all.

I-70 to Frederick, then US 340 south across Harpers Ferry, cross big bridge CLIMB that big ### ridge up and over and stay on US340 until intersect with Route 7 west (Turn right) for Winchester area I-81 south.

    Lepton1 Thanks this.

National Hazardous Materials Route Registry - By State

Here's the official restrictions by state. For each state there is a map, a PDF, and an Excel spreadsheet showing the HazMat restrictions. Reading the map and PDF will sometimes be confusing. Some of the restricted routes are only restricted for certain classes of HM. I pull Class 9 and run into fewer restrictions than I ever imagined.

The link doesn't give you guidance about which roads are best for traffic purposes. If you are heavy I-81 is awful because it's usually just 2 lanes per direction and the cars will be tailgating in mile-long stretches in the left lane. If you want to pass a Swift, you may run out of hours before you find a break in the left lane to start a pass. I routinely avoid I-81. VA is the worst on I-81, IMO.

I cannot imagine bypassing 81 in virginia. But suppose he has to. Dead south on 95 until I40 then west. Roll coal to make up the lost time.
