myself I wouldn't test until I was confident in my shifting
On my road test I had another rig turn left in front of me as I was going thru a green uphill, forcing me to brake unexpectedly and I managed to recover just barely
If you can't shift it when everything is ideal what are you going to do when something unforeseen occurs? -

Start in first or second (if empty) , take foot completely off brake engage clutch press accelerator. -
When i took my CDL test in Tn i asked the evaluator what gear he wanted me to down shift to.. he said here is my rule on the CDL test
1) Don’t get me killed or anyone else
2) Dont hit anyone or anything
3) don’t care about anything else
If you feel Like floating gears or skipping gears i don’t really care. Just do it safely and we will be okay
Drove around town and Interstates for about an hour and never had any issuesFlaSwampRat Thanks this. -
Montana will fail for floating gears. A shop mechanic had to get his cdl & they failed him for it first time.
