Happy Thanksgiving to all btw.
So as some of you might know, I'm a complete newbie looking for a career change into the truck driving trade. I figured I'd prove my commitment by going ahead and getting my permit on my own (studying the CDL book of course) and have achieved it.
So, where I am now? I'm looking to hook up with a trucking company who would sponsor my driving school expenses despite this meaning an agreement to work for them for an agreed amount of time. And I really don't mind going through with this method of ultimately getting my license. I wanted to get past the Thanksgiving Holiday before I get aggressive in my search. Well, it's Friday after Thanksgiving and will begin making phone calls and whatever else it takes to be able to be well o my way by Christmas. Any recommendations, ideas or tips you have will be appreciated. You guys have already been very instrumental in my decisions. I just want you to know that I do take heed to your feedback and do appreciate
The plan

Apply to a few companies with their online applications. If the application looks good, someone will contact you about setting up an orientation date.
I already put the website addresses here for you; just click on each one, then submit the online applications. Some have the "short app", which is fine. If they want more info; they'll contact you.

Most companies have education reimbursement, they will pay you back monthly for your CDL school, this is much better than going to a company school where they will charge you twice as much and make you their slave. When you drive for a company that you are in debt to, they can and will treat you like crap because they know they have you by the balls, you can’t leave, you have to take their crap loads, low miles and low pay. If you are unemployed or low income, your state may pay for your CDL school, check with your state unemployment office. I have met many drivers who went to school with the company they drive for, it is sad to see them trapped and making crap pay. I could have them hired on to my company making double but they signed the contract, they are stuck. I would pay for my CDL school on a credit card before I went into debt with a mega, any day. Do your research and don’t rush into anything

Thank you Chinatown!
You're a big help!Chinatown Thanks this. -
OK. Submit as many apps as you want, then look over the job/school offers and choose whichever looks best for your situation.

Thank Adolf! A lot!
Ultimately, I would be willing to hand over the cash needed, but I would like to hold that card as a last resort. I do want to make an intelligent and not desperate decision (that's where you guys come in, LOL). I will begin to reach out to some companies recommended by China and see where it goes. I do believe you when you say once the company handles your bill they pretty much "own" you and this I want to avoid... -
I'm shocked that Chinatown would put Swift in his list, but thanks.
I personally would not go reefer; I prefer dry van for many reasons.
Adelmo, I have worked at Swift for nearly 9 years.
I consider them a good company, for the most part and for most people. Many would disagree.
But I have had a very good experience here.
The only agreement you will make with Swift is to pay them back for the schooling provided, just like you would do at any trucking school.
The first year of your employment you will have deductions taken out each paycheck to pay it off.
If you leave the company before it is paid off you will owe them the balance.
During the second year they pay you back the same amount each week until you are fully reimbursed.
In my opinion it is the fairest agreement one could have. -
You are disposable.
Rub a newspaper box making a turn over a curb and yer fired. Then entire tuition due that day on your third month.
Better to have your CDL paid for clear and in your pocket. Beholden to no one. This industry has worked over desperate people for too many years dangling tuition money when they have no money at all and wonder what happened when they are disposed of.BigDog Trucker, dtudor and Adelmo Thank this. -
He can also invest that tuition money in some type of retirement account instead of cdl school. Let the trucking company pay for the school. Later he can take that retirement account money and pay cash for a beautiful retirement home.
FlaSwampRat, x1Heavy and Moosetek13 Thank this.
