Hey everybody.
So I'm a 39-year-old guy from Iowa who's wanted a career change for a couple years. I'm starting to give a lot of consideration to trucking, so I came here to do some research.
The reasons I'm leaning toward truck driving are that I'm kind of a loner, a total night owl, and I enjoy driving. I'm also not afraid to work hard, but appreciate it when my hard work is recognized.
I've got a family, so don't think I want to do OTR for the rest of my life, but I'm happy to start out that way, and hopefully after a year or two be able to get something regional that'll give me more home time.
I'm a little concerned about finding a job in the current economy, but I figure at least it's not a job they can send to cheap labor overseas.
Anyhow, when I signed up I got a PM saying to come here and introduce myself, so here I am. I'll probably be posting more in the newb forums.
Thanks for providing a good discussion group and for being so friendly towards newcomers.

What did I tell you about calling the new guys names???

No foolin', I say hi and first thing that happens is I get called fat! It's almost as bad as what happened to my friends UglyDon and PeteThePervert.

You can run all night if you want to... But you also have a 8 am appt. to unload & a 11 am appt to reload....
Your hard work won't be recognized... They will want you to work harder faster!
The thousands of drivers that are currently out of work are also concerned about finding a job in this economy. Nope, they can't send this job overseas for cheap labor to do... They are sending the cheap labor workers over here to do it... And the government is trying to open the Southern border so all the Mexicans can come run our freight. -
Welcome to the forum!

Sleeping from 1 to 9 suits me just fine.
That's pretty much how it works everywhere. Oh well.
True, but I've also heard that newbies are still being hired. And the economy seems to be picking up. Plus I'm not going to school without doing a lot of research.
That's the way it is in pretty much every industry. You want your job to be safe from immigrants, get a degree. Just not in computers, medicine, or the hard sciences, because I promise you there's a guy who studied in India who'll do that open heart procedure just as well as you, only for half the money.
It's the global economy and all that, and unless we get some protectionism going on (and here's a prediction: we won't), it's just something we've got to deal with. -
Thank you, Nana. I'm going to try very hard not to be a poo-poo head.Texas-Nana Thanks this.
