Wow I hadn't heard anything on this in awhile. Until the other night on XM radio. Apparently now there isn't enough women in trucking. Its amazing how this shortage of drivers is being pushed. But there are several people that have a cdl that want nothing to do with a truck. Because of horrible treatment from mega carriers. Or extremely low pay.
I'm sure this industry could attract anyone if the pay was there. But most outfits dont want to pay a decent wage. Whos going to stay at a company that pays $400 p/week with home time once a month or every two weeks. That same pay can be made at a fast food restaurant or retail store and be at home every night.
The only shortages I know of in this industry are parking shortage and a shortage of decent paying companies.
The continuous push of a driver shortage

If the Department of Labor is saying there isn’t a driver shortage AND to increase the pay then it’s official, these companies crying about it are slinging big steaming piles of bull****!

And as if the pay at most places isn't enough, company drivers can no longer get a $15K-20K deduction for per diem nor may they deduct other expenses such as hotels and supplies. That was not nearly compensated for by the increase in the standard deduction.haz-matguru, D.Tibbitt and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
There is a milk hauling company nearby that you would not believe. 30 to 35 cpm, 3 hours before detention starts, the owner just cancelled the 401K plans, health insurance, $1200 per month for family with $2500 deductible. 1 week vacation if you been there 20 years. Equipment junk. Yard is either a mud hole or dust bowl. So, you can picture the type of drivers he gets. Nothing to offer but a lowly pay check. Dispatchers having to dispatch plus do pick ups, a complete circus. I know a driver last Christmas who had 12 years seniority there, he got $300 Christmas bonus. LOL

It's not actually a driver shortage it's actually a problem with driver retention.
drvrtech77, JoeTruck, D.Tibbitt and 2 others Thank this. -
There are outfits that dont believe in retention. Hell once your health benifits kick in. They start to treat the driver like crap until he/she leavesD.Tibbitt, FlaSwampRat, roshea and 2 others Thank this.

I was wanting to get in a truck again before I got too much older. being out of a truck for 15 years looking at these companies they scare the holy crap out of me. I need 6 months experience before I can go out and buy my own truck and lease it to a company like Enterprise or BJ hunt and to be honest these newby companies just don't seem worth my time.
