Starting hot shot trucking with half ton ford f150

Here is what your missing. A 150 can tow 10,000 pounds on a farm or old dirt road. That's what the manufacturers mean, albeit a little misleading. Not interstate at speed. You need to buy at least a 350. Save the truck you have now for the grocery store.

 

You can tow about 6200 lbs, trailer included.

But like you said, we're not engineers.

Lol. I have a ram 1500 with a hemi and towing package. Loaded up a 6 x 12 lawn mower trailer with tree stumps and it was all I could do to drive 15 miles to the dump.

 

But the manufacturer's sales brochure said you could tow the moon.

 

I think you're getting mission creep now. You started talking about a 20 or 40 trailer and huge loads, and now you're talking about basically hauling furniture or Amazon packages.

I don't think it's realistic, a hot shot business, unless you seriously invest in a new truck and trailer and/or a network of business that actually need regular expedited van freight.

You're too locked in on this, and haven't planned it out. I think you're starting to think, which is good.

 

Above all else, right now is a extremely bad time to get into this business with zero experience and having to buy all your equipment. The rates right now are horrible and freight is down and it's the winter slow down..

They have gotten a little silly with these 1/2 ton ratings. TFL Truck did a back to back shootout with Ford's best F150 vs a Cummins Titan XD and they said there was no comparison which one pulled 10,000lbs better. Of course the Cummins XD is not really a half ton truck but I'm not even going to open that can of worms.
